That was very sad news - I spent many nights when I was younger reading his novels and could never get enough. He'll be missed.

Oh, my gosh! I had no idea! Had he been ill? Dang MSN home page didn't have it on there. Shoot, and I was sitting here waiting for the next Joe Leaphorn/Jim Chee book to come out. Does anyone know if there is another one that is ready for publication?

That is too bad. I know he wasn't young, but I don't think he was super old, either.

Tony Hillerman's last book in the Chee/Leaphorn series is Shapeshifter published in 2006.
He was suffering from Rhematoid Arthritis and could not write any longer. He also had suffered several heart attacks.
He was working with his daughter Anne on a photography book of scenery and locations in his books.
This book is due out in 18 months.

Info gleaned from the Santa Fe Post!
He certainly will be missed! I had picked up Shapeshifter a couple of weeks ago from the library and was carrying it around with me. I started to Read it Sunday night so it was kind of a connection to him. I took a sunset hike on Monday night and said a little Thank You to Hillerman's great works.

Yeah, I've read them all, most of them three or four times each. Have read Shapeshifter only one time, so far.
