Short for Hooligan. My two Basenji pups that were born in my bedroom New Years Eve 1992 played so rough with each other, but never left a mark on either of them, they were known as the Basenji Hooligans; I then became Head Hooligan which has since been shortened to Hooli.
Unhappily, I lost both of them before their 11th b-days and lost their mom at 12-1/2, all to liver cancer. _________________ John Richardson and Richie Rich, El Perro de Playero

Here's another one: nobody at work can seem to pronounce or spell "Harquahala."
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it pronounced, "Har-kwa-ha-la"? _________________ Mountains complement desert as desert complements city, as wilderness complements and completes civilization. - Ed Abbey |

My boss, a native Arizonan, told me when she was growing up they pronounced it Har qua HAY la. This doesn't make it right, but is apparently what the locals call it.
She also corrected me one time when talking about the Kaibab, I said "kai bob." She said nobody ever says kai bob--she used to live at the Canyon when her hubby worked on the Kaibab NF.
Tusayan is another one you couldn't possibly pronounce correctly unless someone tells you. It's TU sa yen. Very definite accent on the first syllable.
Another one you couldn't know unless you hear it first is Homolovi. It's ho MAHL a vee. Another one is Betatakin. Be TAH ta kin.
Baboquivari: bab o KEE vuh ree (I climbed it one time. I recommend it to you rock climbing types. We went up from Sells side, from the campground. Had our permit money ready, no one there to collect it!)
Tohono O'odham: Tohono AH AH tum
Teec Nos Pos: Tees nohs pohs with "s" sounds, not "z" sounds.
Pinaleno: pinya LAY no
For newbies to AZ: Gila: HEE la.
Hualapai: WALL a pie
Sitgreaves: sit graves
There are a LOT of place names on the Navajo and Tohono O'odham reservations that I do not know how to pronounce. |

The correct pronunciation for a location IS whatever the locals call it. |

well I'm guilty when looking for names of places often... but Google usually asks s me "Did you mean ???" Most times I say, "Self so that is how its spelled". This could be helpful to me... I'll have to keep these names somewhere. Although, I like to pronounce "Huachuca" Hoochie cooch" I know how to say it but just like calling it that. _________________ Wanderingsoul (Michelle)

I keep my Arizona Atlas handy for such times. Since I have more than one copy, I have one for the house. It is not totally accurate, but is probably better than Google! I also have a plastic chest of drawers for all my topo maps, which is in the computer room, so it's also handy. |

you gotta be careful in the company you may keep when using the words "hootchie cootch"
cause in some 'hoods, a hootchie is the neighborhood tramp and her cootchie is her... well, nevermind.
hows this one?
Tumacacori (tuma-CAH-cor-ee)

My family has been in the Globe/Miami area since the late 1800's. I asked numerous elderly relatives and no one had ever heard it pronounced this way. It was always pronounced Sah-LOAM like the other Salome in Arizona. They laughed because it sounded like "Column A".
Where did this new pronounciation come from? Easterners trying to sound educated?
ps Fortunately we were friends with the Tewksbury's.
Next thing you know, someone's going to try to Frenchify the pronounciation of Charlebois. We never pronounced it the French way.
I was going to see if anyone could pronounce Mount "Wee The Wally", but I couldn't figure out how to spell it. Huithihuali (?). _________________ Anyone can make a hike harder. The skill comes in making it easier. Dosatéhigo nasádo |
