What is the point of this? This site is a collection of hikers/outdoor enthusiasts, not English majors. You could keep this thread alive forever, and still people will misspell place names and other words. I read a few forums on different sites and it is very apparent that people do not read back to themselves what they have typed before they post. If people would take the time to actually look at the computer screen before posting, there'd be a lot less misspellings and perhaps less grammatical errors. There are certain people out there (not necessarily on this site) whose grammar is so bad, it's like trying to decipher some sort of secret code just to make any sense out of what they're saying!

Wow. I really went off on a tangent there. Anyway, I just don't think these types of threads help the situation (it's not really a situation, I'm just being dramatic) at all. That's just my unsolicited 2 cents. Confused

just like Mazatlan (ma zaht LAHN)
exact same meaning

but since its a thread about spelling and not so much pronunciation, lets get started on acronyms, shall we?
PIN - it is not pin number it is Pin. the "n" stands for number, so dont be redundant. Same rules apply for VIN, ATM and GPS

here's the stumper... if can not becomes can't and could not becomes couldn't - then how does will not become won't
should it not be wiln't?

Because that which we will do is that which we are wont to do, so if we choose not to do, then we are wont not to do, hence we won't do. Am I right?? Sorry, that's the best I could come up with...

Read the title of the thread, you guys.

My intention was to create a REFERENCE PAGE so that people could check it if they want to. This was to help people if they want help.

If they don't choose to care about spelling place names correctly, they probably also don't choose to care about other spelling or grammatical functions. I suppose that's okay, it's a free country after all. This attitude reflects poorly on them and on Americans in general, in my opinion, but that is another topic.

I personally do proofread everything I type--that's just how I do things.

It was not my intention to start a debate about general grammar and punctuation, nor was it my intention to start a conversation here. I conceived this thread as just a list of place names so people could look at it IF THEY CHOOSE TO. Diane got it!

So there.

PS

I got started with this because people are always misspelling Hannagan Meadow. I see it in print everywhere, especially in the hiking and biking club bulletins.
