Saturday afternoon we headed out for day/night hike on the Dutchman’s trail, heading to Whisky Springs. We knew we’d have a full moon, but learned from a member of our group that there was also going to be a lunar eclipse that night.
We got about half way up the switchbacks when we were treated to a spectacular sunset. We continued up, but one person in our group had enough and wanted to stop just before we got to the Bluff Springs trail intersection. Rather then leave her alone in the dark we chose to call that our turn around spot. We stopped for a trail dinner and headed back down.
Shortly after our dinner, the moon came up and the eclipse began. About that time we started really kicking ourselves hard for forgetting the camera… What an amazing sight to watch the eclipse in the Supes. As the eclipse ended, the light from the near full moon allowed us to put our flashlights away. The moon lit Superstition landscape is truly a must see. I’ve hiked in the supes in the dark before, but this was my first time out there on a full moon and it will not be the last.
I’m already planning on going out near the next full moon.

I can't resist. We watched the eclipse from a rock at Echo Camp, a mile from Rainbow Bridge. We hiked in (2days) from the old lodge site, were in camp that night, and took two days to hike out the north trail. Hiked in the rain today. One of my more spectacular trips, highly recommended. The bridge in full moon is a site to see. The hike is fabulous without the bridge.

I was in Havasupai with the lunar eclipse. It was so unreal, we all turned off our headlights and were not able to see our hands in front of our faces and when the moon lite up the sky later in the night, it was so bright you could hardly look at it! The entire canyon was lite up!
