I just estabilished my own website which is in the embryonic stage right now but I have posted a guide to the cabin loop which I believe is better than anything else I've seen on the same topic (of course I would, I wrote it).

It's at www.gpsjoe.net

When you click on super-guide, it will bring up a pdf (adobe reader required). Two GPS files, a Garmin .gdb and a .gpx file, containing the tracks for all trails there are attached and can be easily saved to your hard drive.

Hope it works for you.

Congrats! What a fun adventure for you. It's looks nice so far.

Maybe you can set up some GPS training classes on the trail!

I second the motion, and will buy the food afterwards.

I'd need to buy a GPS first but I think I NEED one. Wink
Looks like you've got three students so far.

Uh-oh, I think I just got myself in trouble.

Well maybe we can put something together. There are may ways of using a GPS but my favorite is loading and following an accurate track that someone has recorded. And I also like the Barbershop to Buck Springs Cabin (lunch on the cabin property, my personal favorite of all the cabins) out-and-back hike. It's a relatively easy 10 miler that will show the value of GPS there.

You must own a mapping GPS and transfer the tracks to it in advance and I can tell you how to do that if you have one of the Garmin models. We can put it on the calender for April or May sometime. I will try to talk GB into coming also since she is good with GPS as well.

Excellent - if I'm around (ie: not traveling for work) I would love to attend. I have a GPS (Garmin) but would love participate in this type of thing.

I'm heading to REI now to use a very lovely gift certificate to buy a GPS unit. I'm planning to go with the Garmin 76CSx because that's what I've been borrowing and learning on so far, the REI reviews for this unit are the best of any reviews I've read, and per reviews posted so far the Magellan support for the heralded Triton is sorely lacking. I don't want to spend that kind of money to buy problems.

oh that's the same unit I had been researching. Let me know what the price there is, will ya? COOL! Although if there is one with a larger screen I could use that. Shocked

Joe,
This sounds like something I'd be interested in also.
Time passes so quickly, but I bought myself a Christmas present this year. A Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx ....just need some time and instruction with how to work it. Been meaning to get to REI for one of the classes and the field experience treks but haven't been able to do so yet.

I'd be interested also if something gets going here. I'd say I'm probably navigational deficient in some areas, so been looking around for an orienteering class so I can become better skilled, read Topo maps and understand how to identify the map to the terrain. Somehow my eyes don't see what is there for me to see. Haven't yet stumbled upon one, only a website for orienteering but that is more a group that actually goes out and does it with timings and awards kinda stuff, not necessarily a training group. Although I'd guess if I went I could get some help and instruction.

Only enough to see several very negative reviews on the REI site.

3:26am?

I'm noticing some significant complaints about the Colorado Series, worthy of reading. Like that big display but apparently it doesn't display anything. It is not MAC compatible, neighter is the 76CSx. Does anyone know if the 60CSx is MAC compatible?

Wow... I'm getting further.. Suz, I just took mine out of the box and looked at the instruction manual. Doesn't say if it is compatible or not. But said you have to load the software that came with it. So took that out and read the back of the flap.
Unfortunately it says...."PC only, not MAC compatible"

But I wonder if you have to load this particular software? Maybe an email to Garmin could lead to some further answers.
