Have read a few pages in the 1921 original library version of "Camp-fires on Desert and Lava" by William Hornaday. Exploration of the Tucson/Sonoyta/ Sierra Pinacate area and part of the El Camino. Neat black and white photos, hand drawn maps.
I was lucky to snatch this from a private seller on Amazon.

Will post a review later. Looks to be pretty neat.

Will you be bringing it to the El Camino? Old books are so interesting.

I'll probably be hauling the "library" on the El Camino--most of my references so I can give accurate lectures on the area--- Laughing

My mother gave me that book many years ago. I only read the first part of it. Those old guys were so taken with men being ever so much better than women that I tired of it quickly. Mary

Letty, I'm sure you are a wealth of information without the books. Personal experience has it's own rewards and knowledge

Oh, gosh, isn't it the truth! I have a collection of old adventure books--most are by and about men.

One notable exception is I Married Adventure by Osa Martin. She and her husband, a pilot, flew all over Africa back in the 20's. True, she wasn't on her own, alone, but at least she was THERE! Died in a plane crash with him, too, as I recall.

Another notable exception, you might want to look for these books, Letty and Maryphyl, as the writer was from Tucson and her daughter still lives there: Any books by Constance Helmericks such as We Live in the Arctic, Down the Wild River North, We Live in Alaska, etc. Her daughter is Jean Irons, nom de plume is Jean Aspen. She wrote Arctic Daughter a super neat book about two hippie kids trying to live off the land in the Brooks Range. A MUST READ for anyone who likes adventure books. I've met Jean Irons and her family in Tucson.

Thanks Elizabeth for the suggestions. Always looking for a good read. So far what I have read is interesting if you take into account the times in which it was written. The first impressions of the country and especially descriptions of flora and fauna is neat.
