This was the Nature Conservancy's volunteer weekend at Hart Prairie. Rain kept us house-bound till about 1 PM Saturday, we hiked up Fern Mountain behind the lodge, then tackled a little rebuilding on a split rail fence. Went well and was enough of a workout that I felt it the next day. Sunday we rehabbed a bit of wire fences, removing downed trees from the fence and stretching and tightening. This is the last weekend there, they winterize and shut down for the winter, but I'll be back Memorial Day with VOAz for sure. A few pictures in the gallery.

I really wished I had made Humphreys during the aspen change. You guys got a lot more aspen then we do and I just love them.

Memorial Day is approaching and the annual event at Hart Prairie is open to members. Anyone interested in getting invovled in this let me know. Expect cool mountain air, hard work, good food, fine company, rustic but more than adequate accommodations, and a great time. It fills up pretty fast.

Coming to you live from beatiful down town Hart Prairie . . . .

TNC has internet service here! Ain't technolgy grand!

Drove up today thru Cherry, AZ. I saw it on a map recently and had never been there so added it to the trip. Sort of hidden away, undiscovered, maybe a bit of "Timothy McVeigh-ville" aspect to it if you catch the drift.

The preserve is as incredible as always. Saw two jack rabbits on the way in, and spooked a deer going to the cabin. Five or six are in the meadow and drawing a crowd outside. TNC has some funding to spiff the place up a bit so everyone has new beds, and some other enhancements. I used the "loud snorer" ruse and snagged a private cabin.

The kitchen crew is hard at it getting a jump on tomorrow. I've got a little project going there myself, we'll see how altitude affects it.

More later . . . .

Day Two
Project (cinnimon rolls at altitude) kept me up till eleven thirty, so I wasn't too chipper this morning. Got up late, well after the sun was up. The cabin is dark, so when I opened the door into the bright sunlight it was a Dorthoy / Wizard of Oz / opening the door after the tornado moment. Blew me away.

We built another fence, getting pretty adept at it. Very good to be cowboying in the sunshine, below the mtn, at eighty-four hundred feet. I think we are clearing fire fuel around the buildings tomorrow. Dinner is about ready.

Maintaining my shameless commercial plug for VOAz here. I'm off to a special weekend up at Hart Prairie, some other group bailed so they had an opening and VOAz was filled more or less by word of mouth. Membership has it's priviledges. 110+ down here, 75 up there, so off I go. Bailing out of work shortly and heading north. Have a good weekend, especially all of you up in the White Mountains, as good as I am I can only be in one place at a time!
