Happens every year. Things slow down to a crawl. This site slows down, and nobody seems to care. I attribute the slowdown to these factors:
- Too damned hot outside to do any meaningful hiking in the valley.
- Everyone is on vacation.
- Too damned hot almost everywhere in Arizona.
- We're all too busy trying to stay cool.
- Did I mention that it's too damned hot?
I remember working for REI in the summer up in the Paradise Valley store - it sucked. There were days where, literally, 2, maybe 3 people would show up ALL DAY. Man were we bored.
I hate summer.
I'm moving to Alaska next summer. _________________ "Only small minds want always to be right."

I gotta speak up for summer...I LOVE SUMMER.
I also teach, and haven't had to work since May 23rd. Summer is wonderful for us. Yea, it's hot, but isn't that why god created pools? _________________ -Colin

Your pool is filled with beer?
That might explain some of your posts - or that kissing Hooli's head thing.... _________________ "Only small minds want always to be right."

I am not a big fan of the PHX summer for a number of reasons....
Its too hot...and I loose skin on my steering wheel
I have to wake up at 4:00 am to get a hike in near here
I spend more time driving than hiking ....
But
I get out and see some trails up north (AZ)
I get in more Canyon hikes
I don't have to get cold weather gear for camping-my backpack is light (except for the water I have to haul )
Trails are less crowded!!! Yipeee... _________________ Photos: http://www.pbase.com/desertgirl/galleries

Maybe that explains why the Wonder Cat is always looking out the back window, too! _________________ [/size] |

I just got back from a three mile walk. It started as a run, but quickly became a walk. While doing this I discovered another plus to the Arizona summer...due to the heat, I can hit my target heart rate during a not so brisk walk instead of having to run...so I'm gonna count that as a plus for the summer. _________________ -Colin

I have to say that for it being my second summer here I don't mind the heat so much, except those 116 degree days, for doing everyday things. But when it comes to hiking no thank you. Last year I started hiking in earnest at the end of August and that wasn't too bad. Also with summer class I don't have much time to go anywhere but around town. _________________ "In the first place you can't see anything from a car; you've got to get out of the goddamned contraption and walk, better yet crawl, on hands and knees...When traces of blood begin to mark your trail you'll see something, maybe."

Man, you all are whimps. I moved here from the midwest about 7 years ago. I love this place. Yeah, you have to sacrifice some sleep in the summer, but the afternoon siesta in the cold a/c after a hike is great. Not to mention the cold cervesas...
I thought you all were like hiking gods (and goddesses) when I first logged onto HAZ last year. Guess I was wrong. sniff sniff. My woyld is crashing down on me... woe is me...

I love the desert, up at five, three mile hike or a six mile bike ride, evenings three mile walk or run. Leaving in a hour for a night jeep ride to the Mineral Mts. |

Wish I lived close enough to a decent trailhead.... _________________ Photos: http://www.pbase.com/desertgirl/galleries

We live plenty close. Just have to plan accordingly. I've been out on morning hikes, etc almost every weekend for the past couple of months. Yeah, I admit it gets toasty around noon or later in the east valley, but you can still make it out easily if you're smart about it.
In fact, going to do Cave Trail and more than likely head out to Weavers base for a bit in the morning. Back by noon though. |
