NORTHEAST VALLEY - Airplanes dropped retardant Sunday on a wildfire that burned more than 6 square miles in the Tonto National Forest, nine miles northeast of Rio Verde.

The lightning-sparked Gran Fire ignited during a late afternoon storm Friday that also knocked out power to nearly 5,500 Northeast Valley resident during Friday and Saturday. Power was restored late Saturday night.

The fire had grown to more than 3,900 acres by late Sunday, was only 20 percent contained and is expected to burn for several days, threatening three major power lines serving metro Phoenix, according to the Tonto National Forest.

Fire crews were optimistic that the retardant drops would keep the fire from advancing to the power line, two miles away, said Emily Garber, a Forest Service spokesperson.

Arizona Public Service, one of two major utilities serving the metro area, can use contingency plans to import power into Phoenix if a transmission line is lost, said company spokesman Alan Bunnell.

Crews worked to clear away brush between the fire and Sunflower, a community about five miles north of the fire. The blaze was seven miles east of Bartlett Dam.

An elite fire team took over management of the fire Saturday evening because of concerns about the power lines. About 110 people, three retardant-dropping airplanes and one water-dumping helicopter were fighting the fire.

Well, that would give a good dose of Reality to some folks--no air conditioning! Ugh!

Gran fire containment expected Sunday

Staff, wire reports

Sunday night rain helped firefighters gain control over a wildfire burning near Bartlett Lake that was threatening a series of power lines supplying electricity to the Valley.

Tonto National Forest spokeswoman Paige Rocket said because of the rain, smoke from the fire was not expected to pose any further threat to the two high-voltage lines.

The lightning-sparked Gran fire had charred 3,900 acres of forest land by Monday morning.

The fire was 20 percent contained and not threatening any structures.

Crews said they hoped to fully contain the blaze by Sunday.

The Gran fire is located about five miles south of Sunflower and seven miles east of Bartlett Dam.

I got pounded with some wind, lightning and a bit of rain around Midnight last night. It felt like my house was going to blow over.

We got the same stuff around the same time. There was a storm blowing through winds up to 60 mph, according to the Weather Channel. Sure made for a humid morning... Wacko
