I have gotten some information today from my Dr. for something that may help stop the itching for those who have those itchy scratchy bites. It is NOT prescription but you have to ask for it over the counter at the pharmacy. It is normally used to treat HIVES... I have not tried it and don't need it at the moment, so thought some of you who itch may want to check it out and let us know if it works.
It is called SARNA _________________ Wanderingsoul (Michelle)

Noxema has the same ingredients. Also suggest Calamine Lotion. |

Does it work on fire ant bites? A couple of those buggers bit my feet on the Kaibab yesterday. Ouch! _________________ Anywhere is within walking distance if you spend the time. |

Mine was better. Several months ago I was putting powder in my cycling shorts. I did not read the label, the powder contained menthol. Twenty miles into the ride, I thought fireants took up residence in my shorts. I read labels now. |

Fire Ants? On the Kiabab. Are you sure? _________________ "Surely all God's people, however serious or savage, great or small, like to play. Well they were red, bite me, and it hurt like a sting.
But I guess I couldn't say for certain. They might have had black abdomens - some nearby ants did, but I don't know if they were from the same group that assaulted me. I've also got raised bite-marks from them, but I've never been bitten by any ants before, so I'm just making my best-guess estimate as to what they were. _________________ Anywhere is within walking distance if you spend the time. |

GTG- That's nasty! You can talk about it depending on what body part it is on. Just kidding!
Nighthiker- I can see getting a rash from that stuff. When you powder the shorts, do you powder the entire inside or just the seat area?
PageRob- I bet they hurt. I have only gotten bit by black ants, stepped on a bee and bit by my 7 foot boa Daisy in high school. Skeeter bites also. |

You scared me for a minute. Many ants bite and bite hard. I expect you got bit rather strongly as well.
Fire ants. When a cotton field in Georgia is burned you see dozens if not hundreds of 8 inch to two feet tall mounds in one acre. If you step on a fire ant mound they boil out like lava from a valcano. A fire ant is tiny but bites with about half the impact as a bumble bee. A two foot mound of fire ants can strip a small dog clean in 30 minutes.
I think fire ants can't survive in the desert. They thrive on damp conditions. They'de just dry up here. Fire Ants are just another reason why this Georgia boy lives in the desert. Fire ants are a great contributor to the fact that backpacking is lousey in most parts of Dixie. Ah, gottcha. Well, its good to know that I may be in for more pain when I'm back in the area, its unlikely that they'll kill me (hopefully).
Seriously, good to know. Thanks. _________________ Anywhere is within walking distance if you spend the time. |
