So I go to turn on my computer the other day.... Nothing happens....
push the button a few times and I smell smoke.....
Then BOOM! the Power supply explodes! Spewing smoke and burning electronic smell all over the place.... I pull the plug and reach for the fire extinguisher.
I find myself at best-Buy... a new power supply for $50 or a new tower with power supply for $54.
So I get my new case home and swap everything over.... Power up,
Sizzle sizzle BOOM! The mother board and processor and fused, and there is another helping of that smoke and smell....
I get back from Fry's Electronics with new Motherboard and processor....
Hook everything up.... Nothing!
Ge-force 4 video card is fried - 40 gig HDD doesnt spin
But no Computer Nerd who is worth his Geek code throws anything away, so here I am with a frankenstien of spare parts.
And Your weekend?? |

Fire extinguishers make a huge mess, indoors or out. I've seen both. The smell is weird too. Sorry to hear about your computer cake. I haven't had one go like that yet. Hope you had backups. They say not to let the smoke out of your harddrive, it's supposed to be bad.

Mac's are dangerous. There's no blue screen of death to remind you it's time to eat. I think that's why my Mac friends are so skinny. Nothing like a general protection fault to give you a break from the cathode ray tube. |

Stan - I appreciate your affection for a doomed company, however - they are doomed.
Read this analysis which I rather enjoyed: Apple Exit Strategy _________________ "Only small minds want always to be right."

It wasnt surge protector related..... The initial boom caused damage to the motherboard which showed up after the power supply was replaced...
I got an upgraded processor and motherboard for $89. so it wasnt really that bad.... I had a second Hard drive formatted and win xp already installed, so it was a simple matter of swapping it out...
Total boom damage dollars was only $140. Could have been worse. |

Ah yes the Linux Penguin. There are those who believe that Linux is the OS of the future. Time will tell. Right now I'm kind of liking Unix. Hmmmm... very interesting. Does everyone out there know that Mac OS X is really a modified Free BSD, a version of Unix. That's right. On that piece of crap that I ought to throw away, I'm running Apache Web Server, MySQL and PHP4. And yes I'm running a forum just like this one powered by phpBB2. Mac OS X is Open Source and encourages software development. I believe it is truly a viable box.
I really don't think Mac is on the verge of going under. Time will tell. For now I'm sure glad I'm looking at the Aqua interface and not the XP. Although it's fun using the command line (Darwin Terminal) now and then with absolutely no fancy shmancy interface.
I wonder how many of those that are critical of Apple really know what they are all about.
There is one recent drawback. Al Gore now sits on the Board. What in the world is that all about?
