The test involves putting on a 45 lbs weighted vest and walk three miles in 45 min. or less. Did mine the other day in a light rain and came across the line at a little over 40 min.

Flat ground?

Flat ground, usually a high school track.

Hmmm. 4 MPH. That's a brisk walk but I should think well within the limits of most anybody who carrys a pack up and down slopes all day. Am I correct?

The Central Arizona Mountain Rescue Association has (or at least had) a pretty intense fitness test involving a weighted back and a timed double summit of Piestewa peak....followed by timed sit-ups and push-ups....I believe they changed it now..

Up here on the A/S forest they do it as a hike on dirt roads, I think. Anyway, every year I hear people either whining or bragging about it.

So, Mr. Nighthiker, do you happen to use any gear from The Pack Shack? Reason I ask, I just recently quit working there after four years of sewing packs, duffel bags and other wildland firefighter gear. The little factory is located here in Eagar. I liked my job and my boss well enough, but sewing 8 hours a day is hard on a person, plus the boss wasn't very flexible about me taking off for backpacking trips. I did listen to hundreds of books on tape, though--I miss that part of it! If you're not familiar, go to www.thepackshack.com They make some bomb-proof gear!

The pack is a weighted vest and I do not know who the vendor is, no labels.
Our wildland gear that is issued is labeled GSA with a contract #. Some of our folks buy their own gear but I do not know which company though.
