Arizona State Parks are readying for a big state-wide celebration in the fall. The Patagonia Lake State Park hopes to open expanded hiking and birding areas, and VOAz is helping with trail construction.
We assembled Friday morning and went out to the site by about 11:00 AM. The objective for the weekend was to route the trail down from the old railroad bed into the Sonoita Creek bed, around some tributary creek crossings, in three places. The creek has about a 15 foot cut bank and the trail has to decend and accend this in several places, a feature that is subject to erosion. We built structures to control the erosion as much as possible. I drew the "load rocks - unload rocks" straw.
We camped at the developed sites at the park, pretty high end, and not a wilderness adventure by any means-bathrooms, showers, fire pits, etc. It is a good facility for a developed site, and it was wonderful to have hot showers after digging and grubbing in the dirt. VOAz provides meals, and does a great job at it. The Park provided a guided tour of the lake Saturday evening with a biology and history lesson of the area--a great way to unwind a bit after the day shoveling, lifting and hauling. The "gators" were a great help, but the novelty of driving wore often shortly.
This was a fun weekend of great exersize, wonderful company, good food, and an overall "feel good" experience. Pic's in the gallery. _________________ The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see. |

This is a great "Family" campground. No hethans allowed, they may cause a ruckus! But, I do know that the campground hosts are very nice.
On a serious note, sounds like you had a good time. I am glad to see that they are making improvements to the trails. We've taken our 2nd/3rd graders down there. Beautiful area, and a great place to visit when it's not too hot. The bees can get a bit bothersome in the daytime. They have boats to rent ant the marina and you can enjoy fishing and swinming in the lake. We paddled across the lake and did some trail exploring opposite the campground. Very cool.
Kudos to you for putting in time and sweat. _________________ Be the change you wish to see in the world.

Cool! Shawn, thanks for helping to make our trails so wonderful. I know there is a LOT of work that goes into trail building. Mary |
