I haven't been doing much hiking lately, but have been doing a lot more outdoor climbing ... and finally made it up The Praying Monk! I've been wanting to climb that thing since the first time I ever hiked Camelback (much like the first time I ever saw Weavers Needle, which I have to climb soon!).

Anyhow, I've now climbed it twice in the last couple of weeks and it is awesomely fun! The Phoenix Rock 2 book describes the easy "East Face" route as an "ancient classic with spectacular exposure and an exciting yet comfortable summit" - I'll say! The climb is only a 5.3 - easy enough for just about anyone to second, but I had to lead it both times. Now I am brand new at leading, and obviously never had a chance to follow on this route before so it was quite stimulating for me (no falls, though)!! Jess, my climbing partner flew up it as the second, and agreed it was one of the coolest things we've ever done.

Anybody who's climbed in the gym a little, and wants to try a really, really fun and rewarding outdoor climb should go for it! In fact, I'm willing to climb it again anytime, so let me know if you need a leader or just some company ... Very Happy

That is a nice accomplishment, much better than I could do with climbing an exposed face. If you put a rope there then I would like to climb but not without one. We have had our share of "climbing" in recent times and sometimes it has to be done if you want to get into certain places. It is on my list to learn more of and how to use some of the equipment as well.

Way to go.

Yes I would like to do that sometime as well. Still have yet to tough anything with a rope yet.

That's me this year as well. I'm only just now getting interested in rope but reasons are based mostly on getting from A to B so I can eventually get to C.

Hey Cat,

Count me in. Mr. G, if you're interested the climbing group in Tucson, top-ropes on Lemmon routes, no leading required, and very neat people, almost every weekend.

Kelly, Lzyboy and I along with a couple other people are going to do the Needle sometime soon, this spring, (right Pete?). It's one of those rite-of-passage where you can say you've done it...though it's not an in-your-face butt-kicker-hanging from a two-finger jamb trying to figure what's next. Smile

And wow Kelly, I'm impressed that you're leading now! Way to go! JW.

Thanks, JW - I'd like to join you for the Needle if possible. I might not be able to wait, though - thinking of doing it next week! Mr. Green

Diane, all you would need would be a harness, rock shoes, and belay/rap device with locking biner ... you could even rent the shoes! Lets's do it! Laughing

Sure, I'll go whenever you can. I only live 5-10 minutes away, and the whole adventure won't take long ... finding a parking place on the weekend will be the hardest part!

Have you done any rappelling yet, or do we need to do rap lessons first? The standard descent is a thrilling mostly free rappel, although you can rap down the same face you climbed if you're not into the free thing - I personally love dangling in space while sliding down the rope! yoyo

Kelly,

Great to see you back and posting! For some reason I thought you had moved out of state. I don't climb but would willing to tag along as support crew just to do the hike there and I can catch all the adventure photos with my 12X Zoom camera and tripod.

Well....you may talk me into one little baby climb and a short rappel yoyo (somehow if JW is involved it will involve rain and "it's only another 1/4 mile) NO NO NO NOT straight down DAD BLAST IT JW.

Hope to meet you soon Kelly~~~~~we bothalready know JW Twisted Evil but love him

Mr. Green

I have rappeled and loved it! No free rappeling yet though, but I am more than willing to try it!

Well Done CactusCat!

The Needle is on my list as well...we're going to start hiting the rock gym weekly to get back into the feel of climbing, it's been way too long...so...sometime this year we'll be knocking the Needle of the list as well...any new beta would be appreciated!

Trish - it would be great to have you along as photographer! You will have to do one "baby climb" up the Headwall (and then rap down it) in order to reach the base of the Monk ... the hike itself is short - maybe 1/2 mile or so.

Diane, are we planning this for the 28th weekend? Saturday or Sunday? Gotta make sure and get it off work now!

Jess and I went to Lookout Mt. today and did some toproping on the "Dead Dobie" wall - fun stuff!

This was my first climb! I love any kind of free hanging rappel! You guys have a great time. I do have a harness, belay device, and prusik's if anyone needs to borrow them! (I am also still selling some climbing gear, a rope and some pro) Mary
