Went out to North Peak today. Travelled the entire length of 414, in at Rye, up to the North Peak TH, then out to 406 and through Payson on the way out. 414 was in excellent shape and easily passable. A few old ruts from recent rain were easy to avoid. There was water in Rye creek, but very little. A passenger car could have made this trip unless it is a particularly low slung model. 406 wasn't that great. Passable and in reasonable condition, but rougher than 414. If you are approaching from the south, I wouldn't bother with the extra mileage through Payson to gain the little extra of paved road. 414 was just fine. _________________ Mike T

The 414, the Old Roosevelt to Payson Road. I have an old 15" min. map and for navigation exercises I attempt to locate the USGS benchmarks. |
