Happened to see Channel 3 spot about hikers being picked up from Lost Dutchman this morning at about 6:40 am. It can be very tricky up there. It looked like that face to the right of Siphon Draw on top, but I'm not sure. One was walking and the other had to be airlifted out. Even in the mildest areas, you have to take care! Also reminds me to try not to go it alone! |

Yes it can be very tricky out there, that is why you should always be prepared, KNOW YOUR CAPABILITES, and familarize yourself with the area via maps, websites or whatever, before taking that first step, and always have good maps with you.
It amazes me to see people out there with absolutely nothing, not even water.
Any one of us can have an accident out there, regardless of experience, but getting lost is due to total lack of prepartion. |

I can easily see how people have gotten lost. I was hiking in the snow one December day in 2000, doing some hunting actualy in Scotia. Remember?? Anyways, we went one way which wasn't even on the path and ended up back at a spot I knew, but somehow we got turned around so that we were headed back to the car, and didn't even realize it. May not make much sence here to most cause I didn't go into much detail, however, someone might remember our little lake expedition that one morning, that was crazy! All in all, I always keep a compass on me. _________________ "IRONMAN" cometh, hiketh, destroyeth |

Yeah I understand, I have been lost in a blizzard too, while cross county skiing, but that is a bit different than having to be hauled off Camelback because you went up there when it was 115 and didn't take any water and all the sudden you are dehydrated and suffering from heatstroke. It happens all the time around here.
I also know how easy it is to get disoriented in the Supes, I have done it many times, but that is what a map and gps or compass are for. All I'm saying is if you are going to put yourself into a situation u better be prepared. _________________ Our lives are not determined by what happens to us but by how we react to what happens, not by what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life. |

There's a BIG difference between a prepared hiker confused by inclement weather and an unprepared or underprepared hiker making poor choices. AZHeat is right! Didn't a female tourist just pass way after having suffered a heatstroke on camelback? Maybe around xmas? I think she was young, like mid 20s _________________ -Colin

As you all may recall,I have off Sunday+Monday and I have a good girlbud that I hiked with for about 10 yrs. or so.She is guilty of going alone on Mondays if I have class and can't go.She has gotten lost several times, fell once, almost hurt severely, and STILL doesn't get it.I think the last fall scared her.It was in Box Canyon in Payson+ she almost lose consciousness! Anyone can twist an ankle or take the wrong step. You always need to be aware, even with years of experience.I never go alone! |
