Have you ever thought it'd be cool to have screensaver featuring the photos from our Gallery? Well now you can have one! This will only work on Windows (it's been tested on XP and NT, but should work on 98, 2000 and ME, as well). It's probably not well suited for PC's using a dialup connection, but try it if you want. The instructions for setting it up follow:

1. Click the following link, when the file download message appears, click the "Save" button. In the "Save as" window, browse to your WINDOWS/system32 directory (it will most likely be on your C drive) and save the file there.

http://www.arizonahikers.com/screensaver/Web%20Gallery.scr

2. You may need the following file, most likely though you won't. Browse to your WINDOWS/system32 directory and look for a file named 'msvcrt.dll'. If it isn't there, click the following link and do the same as you did with the previous file, save it to WINDOWS/system32.

http://www.arizonahikers.com/screensaver/msvcrt.dll

3. Right-click on your desktop and select "Properties" (or, open your control panel and double-click on "Display Properties". Click on the "Screen Saver" tab. In the dropdown list of screen savers, select "Web Gallery". Click the "Settings" button. In the box labled, "Your Gallery URL", type in the following address: http://www.arizonahikers.com/forum/modules/gallery Click the "Read" button, in a few seconds a list of albums will display. Check the box next to any albums you want to add to the screensaver (only whole albums can be selected, not individual photos). Note that albums which contain sub-albums will have a "+" sign, click that to display the sub-albums. Choose any of the sub-albums you want to add, do not choose the parent album unless it contains photos. Set the number of seconds you want each picture to display in the box at the top. (Don't set the "Double Screen" property, it doesn't seem to work.) Click Ok on the screensaver settings, then on the Display Properties settings, and you're done.

Enjoy!

Hey, i am getting and error. I checked and i do have the 'msvcrt.dll'.

The error happens when i enter the URL, and hit READ. The error states

"
Error reading files on your server.
Please check for files screen_saver.php and screeen_saver_temp.php in gallery directory
"

Any clue?

Thanks

Make sure you enter the url exactly as I indicated. It's case-sensative, so make sure to enter it all lower-case. It should be: http://www.arizonahikers.com/forum/modules/gallery If you still have problems, change to a different screensaver, click ok, then reopen the display properties and try it again.

Pretty kewl Mike. Good job.

FYI, if you get an error reading the location when hitting the 'read' button at first, try it again. My PC picked up on the location the second time.

Can't take credit for it. One of the guys who writes the gallery software we use wrote it. It seems to work pretty well, just don't check that "Double Screen" option.

Lost it, or it's not working?

That's probably due to the server problems we've been having. The screensaver pulls photos over the internet from AZH's server. The script that fetches the photos, which lives on the server, may be exceeding the time limit allowed in the server's php settings. Hopefully, once we move the site to the new machine, this will no longer be an issue.
