I have one thing to mention if you have sciatic nerve damage or recurring problems. When my sciatic acted up (20 years of skateboarding, go figure)
an occupational therapist instructed me to remove anything from back pockets while sitting. Guys, even your wallet can shift your Ilium slightly and over time... It seems to work for I havent had sciatic pain for nearly 3 years.

Thanks for the empathy,Mike. I could accept it if it were by my own wear and tear. I've been through at least seven major surgeries in my life and should be ok. Must've needed a lesson in how the law works! Confused

My brother-in-law got surgery to fuse a couple of vertabrae together, and he goes out and plays golf and basketball regularly. He still has some pain now and then, but compared to pre-surgery, it's a walk in the park.

Good luck - and hopefully you'll have even more success than my bro-in-law!

Saw surgeon at Barrow's Dr. Curtis Dickman, who is also a triathelete and understands the need to be physical and has done lots of micros, lammies and fusions. He would like me to have an epidural first ;thinks it may help the nerve inflammation and irritation/pain. Too bad my ins. doesn't cover anything but hospitilization( the joys of the single, self-employed). I hope it helps!

GeorgAZ,

Sorry to hear that surgery is the answer and you are still in pain. Surgery is always scary no matter how much you have had. Personally I would be scared silly. I Hope my good tale brings you some encouragement. My sister had back surgery 27 years ago. Her sciatic nerve was pinched so badly that she was losing feeling in the leg and dragging it. They removed a disc and fused the back together. Since then she has been fine and mobile. Occasionally alittle stiff when she overdoes, but nothing negative happened. She no longer tries to lift or move things around like she did before. But she probably overlifted back then. With 27 years passing I am confident that many improvements have been made. This does not negate your nervousness and apprehension. All I hope is that this will encourage you to be strong when you hear negative stories and wanted to provide you with a positive outcome. Wishing you the best with a speedy recovery. Take Care

Back update... I had my first in a series of threel umbar epidurals, on Tues. To show what a rip off health ins is., as I am self employed and have a 2k deductible with which my co. will give a discount within network, they quoted me $1326 PER shot/event! I asked the ins.gal at St.Joe's outpatient to help me negotiate a private pay; she came back with $300 per event! That I can deal with, so who do you think makes the $$? The facility will only possible get paid $200 for that by the ins. co. What a country!! I have some pain relief, but not much hope for the return of nerve function in my toes, but we'll see how it goes. Thanks for all your support and well wishes!! Smile
