Hi Gang,
Does anyone know if Route 288 (AKA Globe-Young Highway) is paved or dirt? If it's both, what sections are dirt?
For those not familiar with the names, this is the road that runs north from Roosevelt Lake to Young to Route 260 (Rim Road)
TIA,
Bill

Bill: It is paved, but only up until about Workman Creek near the top of the Sierra Anchas. From there, it is dirt until Young, where it is paved for about 2 miles.

It is SR 288 from the River north to Young. From there it is a Forest Service Road up to SR 260. ADOT has been trying to get rid of the road for years, but the County won't take it. Bet it hasn't been plowed yet.....Check with ADOT at www.dot.state.az.us Look for Highways or ITD Division, then District Engineers. This is in the Globe District, Richard Powers is the District Engineer there. You can give them a call and see if the road is open. Maybe call 511 and see if it is on a closure list.

The FR north of Young is closed seasonally. (DAMHIKT---cost us two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and a twelve pack of Cowboy Koolaid to get the Starship--not Heat's--just a 1970 tricked out Challenger) pulled out by a ADOT plow back in 1971. Helped that the gal with us cried and showed some leg. Sigh, seven years of college, wasted.....)
