I purchased and installed a Splash Guard for my wide mouth nalgene water bottles. The splashquard is made of polypropylene and the Nalgen bottle is made from polyethylene. I noted a strong odor and I suspect the cause is a reaction of the splash guard with the water bottle (I store the splash guard in the water bottle). Any one else note or use them ? The reaction reminds me of the plastic worm fishing tackle left in the plastic tray of the tackle box.

I didn't have quite a strong a reaction, but that could be because I ran the splash gaurd through the dishwasher before using it.

They're handy little devils, aren't they!

I notice the odor and I too store the guard with the bottle. I guess one could experiment, although I kinda like the smell.

What is a splash guard and why would you want one?

It controls the amount of water that comes out of your wide-mouth nalgene bottle, kinda like the special lids for hot coffee

Ahh, like a sippy cup!

I know dissimilar metals will react in the presence on an electrolite, but I don't think plastic composites do that. I'd bet it's just the natural smell of the material. Run it through the dishwaher like Colin did and see if the problem goes away.
