For those who are interested here are some (but a not all inclusive list) of guide books I have found helpful in my southern utah excursions--

Steve Allens Canyoneering- San Rafael Swell
Canyoneering 2 - technical hikes in the Escalante area
Canyoneering 3 - loop hikes in the Escalante region.

His road logs are very acurate; he uses times in motion hiking rather than mileage. Difficulty is pretty acurate-- he's very fit, about 6'4" and a rock climber so some of the difficulty is a bit more if you are not tall and not as strong.

Michael Kelsey's
Hiking and Exploring the Paria River- he has a new 4th edition out and it is worth it- has quite a few new areas in it.
Canyon Hiking Guide to the Colorado Plateau
Utah's Henry Mountains and Robbers Roost
Hiking and Exploring the San Rafael Swell
Hiking, Biking, and Exploring Canyonlands Nat'l Park and Vicinity

The Falcon Guides
Wild Utah- by Bill Cunningham and Polly Burke
Hiking Grand Staircase-Escalante and the Glen Canyon region- By Ron Adkison

A Guide to Cedar Mesa- Peter Francis Tassoni

Utah Hiking by Buck Tilton

Trail Guide to the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument by David Urman-- I have found one directional mistake in this book, but otherwise seems right on it.

And of course the series of Trails Illustrated Maps for the above areas.

In the April issue of BackPacker magazine, Annette McGivney has an article regarding Glen Canyon about hiking the areas exposed due to the low lake levels. The hikes depicted look like something I am interested in doing later in the year.

Thanks for the info RedRoxx. I'm in Utah this week and it seems that there are oodles of outdoor sporting stores, I will hit some today and look for some of these books.
