Well, I wandered up the Spencer trail a few years ago.... Does that count? And someday I'd like to do the Dominguez - Spencer loop. I have a description of it somewhere at home, I'll try to find it. I think it's in one of M. Kelsey's books....

I wish I could hike in your backyard. I haven't been there yet, but from the pictures I've seen, I'd say nice landscaping.

Your right. It is stunning. I hope you get the chance. There are lots of permit hikes...but the areas that arn't are equally beautiful. There are so few hikers in the areas that I haunt that I note the tracks. And the tracks stay a long time. Leave nothing but footprints has a whole new meaning up here. Wink

Oh my God. Well. Page (I live about 8 miles from Page) is about 80 miles or so from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Thirty miles from Grand Staircase. Forty miles from the Paria wilderness area. Across the street from the Glen Canyon Recreation area. Across the street from the Vermillion Cliffs wilderness area.

You get the picture. So you have to decide how long of a hike, and what you want to see. My personal favorite is across the street and into the Vermillion Cliffs wilderness area. There are few (if any) designated trailheads. But if you have a little guidence you can see some wonderfull things. Hiking in the area involves sand and slickrock, with altitude gains to obtain a view over the rim of the paria or the start of the Grand Canyon. On other sites I have posted about searching for Thousand Pockets, an unusual area of sandstone which traps water in bathtub to hottub size pools. This was my obsession last year when I was a travel nurse in this area. So you pick what you like (trees, rock, water or just spectacular views) and I will try to help. If you need company I would love to have a group come up and hike with me. Wink
