This is a movie coming out next week nationwide. It will probably be a limited release initially - but from all reports it is one heck of a movie; hyper-realistic climbing scenes and really excellent cinematography.
It is the story of a pair of alpine climbers who encountered a spot of tragedy back in the mid 80's. A true story.
I heard an interview with the man that wrote the book of the same title who was one of the two to live through the experience, and let me tell you, it was one of the most riveting interviews I've ever heard.
A truly incredible story. I may have to go buy the book after I've seen the movie.
Definitely put it on your must see list.
Check out the movie trailer. _________________ "Only small minds want always to be right."

There is a good article about this story and the film in the current issue of Outside Magazine. Apparently the film is a psudo documentary which more accurately depicts climbing and the story of these two climbers and what happened (unlike many of the other climbing films ie: Cliffhanger).
Apparently one climber had to cut the rope that his partner was hanging onto in order to save his own life. (his partner had fallen and was non responsive). The climber who cut the rope survived, and thought the other had fallen to his death. The climber who fell suvived in a crevass.
The movie recounts the events surrounding the climb and the aftermath of both climbers.
Should be a good movie.

Decent re-cap - but listening to the guy who was interviewed (the guy whose rope was cut and fell into a cravass) - the humanity of the story is incredible. He says his partner was a hero for cutting the rope. They did many more climbs together after the incident and the book was written to exhonorate his buddy.
I cannot wait to see the movie. _________________ "Only small minds want always to be right."

I plan on seeing this one too. Maybe we could do an AZH outing for this one or would that be too corny?

Au, contraire....Jim Rome. He interviews all kinds of folks, and since the topic was generally sports related, he had the dude on. Very cool interview.
And no - the closest I come to NPR is 89.5 FM. _________________ "Only small minds want always to be right."

I don't think it's such a bad idea. It may not work for everyone, but some people might be very interested. _________________ "Only small minds want always to be right."

This should be an interesting "Quasi-Documentary" ! ( generously borrowing from NPR ofcourse!)
This is an interesting new trend in making movies or is it a new trend in documentary ? They have the voice-overs of the real folks with regular actors enacting the incidents.
I am looking forward to this one... Does anyone know when AZ will see a release of this one ? _________________ Photos: http://www.pbase.com/desertgirl/galleries

If the movie is true to the book it will be riveting. I checked out the book at the library last summer and read it. It's an incredible story of survival against the odds. It was also written from both points of view, the climber with the broken leg and his buddy. The book is not too big. It can be read in a week if you can put it down at night. Maybe 16 hours for a straight through reading. ( Would that be an epic reading session? )
I'll definitely go see the movie if it's here. |
