Trail use and etiquette is always a hot topic on outdoor-related sites. This same post generates an almost fanatical opposing viewpoint on mtb sites, i.e. MTBR.COM.

Personally, as a hiker/backpacker/mountainbiker, I wish some mtbr's would pay more attention to trail etiquette and rules. Years ago, hikers had the trails to themselves with the exception of an occaisional equestrian encounter. Those days are gone and as trail traffic varies and increases, particularly on popular trails, there will be more confrontations between users. I'm amazed at some of the places I've seen fat tire tracks in the wilderness.

Lately, I've been attending meetings held by the Maricopa County Parks Department, to discuss what and how to best develop and preserve the San Tan Mountains Regional Park. One the more popular ideas is to create separate use-specific trails designated for hiking, biking and horses. Things are still in the input-think-about-it stage but we can all hope for the best.

On a related sidebar, I've often guiltily dreamed about mtb-ing Trail 109 into Reavis Ranch. Since it's an old roadbed, it'd be a great ride. However since it too is in federally protected wilderness, I'll never do it.
