I've received conflicting recommendations as to the best route to Lakeside, Arizona...we're taking off for the weekend tomorrow....thought I'd ask the resident experts here...
Any suggestions?
Trail suggestions would be great as well! _________________ -Colin

Probably the quickest route would be through Globe, out 60 to ShowLow. Then back down 73. It's half way from ShowLow to Pinetop. |

The cabin owners told us to go up Beeline thru Payson, then east....
But when I mapquested it, it recommended the 60 route... _________________ -Colin

You can go that way too, but 60 should be quicker and more scenic |

I think it's probably a toss-up. Beeline/260 could actually be faster depending on the traffic from Payson to the top of the rim. If you hit a lot of traffic in the Salt River Canyon, the 60 route is most certainly slower. But, the scenery is awesome, it's like a smaller Grand Canyon! _________________ |

See that's just it...we're leaving at 4, so it'll be dark for most of the drive...but would traffic be an issue...I guess we'll toss a coin... _________________ -Colin

The 60 route is pretty twisty-windy. Beeline would be easier to drive in the dark. |

You could go up one way, come back the other. In that case, I'd save the scenic route for your return trip if you'll be doing it in daylight. That's what we did when we went to Escudilla last summer. Took forever to get through Salt River Canyon, but that was July 4th weekend. _________________ |

When Pat and I came out here on Spring Break (before we moved to AZ), we came down through the Salt River Canyon...it was beautiful, and we encountered a roadblock...a cow was blocking traffic...no joke, in the middle of nowhere, this cow is half on/half off the road...I've no clue how it could have gotten to the spot where it was just hanging out... _________________ -Colin

Colin- 87 to 260 is the fastest. 87 to Payson is four lane totally controlled access, and runs 70mph. 260 along the Rim to Heber, Show Low and Pinetop is also a scenic drive. Watch out for elk, esp. after dusk.
Salt River Canyon (60) is slower and subject to delays, especially on the Rez north of the Salt. The drive from Globe to Superior is slow.
I agree with Mike; if you are not familiar with the routes, by all means do both. The drive from Pinetop to McNary and then Sunrise is very scenic as well. Dunno what the snow cover is in the area. -R |
