Ambika, Trish and I have decided that we NEED to do some exploration on and around Lake Powell and have decided a houseboat is the way to go. We have settled on the weekend of March 21st-23rd for our three days in order to avoid peak season pricing and skin cancer. Wink

I've trolled every inch of shoreline on Powell twice. Once in a 15 foot runabout and another time in a 19 foot cuddy. 12 days each time I think. They were the best boating experiences I've ever had and I was brought up on a marina.

We've filled a 46 boat that sleeps 6, moving up to the next size now. Come on with us, it's going to be beauitful and fun!

Looking for hike options around the lake. I know I'd like to see Rainbow Bridge but I'm open beyond that.

That shouldn't be a problem. I'd make it the main attraction of your second day. Take the powerboat up from the houseboat after breakfast, go to Rainbow Bridge, hike around up-canyon too. Head to Dangling Rope marina to gas up, and make your way back to the HB. Should be most of the day to do all that. I like Navajo Canyon, and there's an old miner's trail you can take up to the mesa-top, but I think the old hitching post for the boat is underwater now, so that may not be a reasonable hike. You can park your houseboat in Warm Creek or Padre Bay, and just go hiking across the slickrock. There's neat rock formations, some dinosaur footprints (though I haven't seen those in person), an old coal mine up Warm Creek where Charles Spencer mined coal and brought it down to Lee's Ferry with that old (now sunken) steamboat. Most of the hiking options around the like are just explore where you think things looks neat, basically.

Thanks Rob---I'm sure I'll be back in contact with you soon for more info. Sorry there is a conflict in scheduling. I'm sure I'll want to get back on this lake again soon.

Anyone else have suggestions?

Experience?
I've driven cars, trucks, a Greyhound bus, single engine airplanes, and briefly steered a 550 ft destroyer, but never a houseboat. How hard can it be, look at all the tourists they rent 'em to.

Ok who's diving down to swap out the propeller?

Suz, any idea how much gas is going to cost for that beast?

That's a REALLY good question. I suppose it depends on how many hours we are running the engine at full HP and how far we go, right? I did figure that gas would be a lot less for three days than it would be for 7 days.....so I've got that going for me.

I did get some mathematical puzzle to solve from Rob but haven't sat down to do the calculations. Perhaps I'll PM that to you and you could run the numbers for us??? LOL

If you have to ask . . . . . Very Happy
It won't be cheap but split 6+ ways it won't be bad.

We're moving up to a longer boat with more people.....so possibly split by 8-12 people.....I don't think that fuel tank is larger........but I'll have to double check on that. Also wondering if we get a credit for unused fuel?

Rob sent this----
Figure at least a dollar per gallon more than you'll pay in Page (currently about $3 and change) at Wahweap and Antelope Point, roughly. If you go up to Dangling Rope (in three days, you probably won't have time to on the HB, but on the powerboat you could), its at least $1.75 more than Page. Gas consuption: 1-2 gallons an hour, for both boats. Powerboat goes about 35mph and has a 50 gallon tank, HB goes about 8-10mph and has 2 60 gallon tanks. HB will be more expensive, fuel wise. When you run the generator, that's another 1 gallon an hour.

If you move up the the 59' boat, the gas consumption increases, as does tank size. Figure 3-4 gallons an hour for the motors and 2-3 per hour for the generator with 2 90 gallon tanks. If you get the 59XL, you get another 90 gallon auxillary tank that you can fill the powerboat with. It also has an inverter (XL only) so you don't have to run the generator all the time.

I don't think we have enough people yet to move up to the 59 foot boat. I'm thinking we're at the 53/54 foot boat. Do you know if that has the same size fuel tank as the 46 foot?

I've got 8 people on a list with two or three additional people saying maybe. 3 of those 8 people are confident that they can drive the boat....and my brother wants to come just to see me drive the boat! Wink

I'll call today and see if I can get a better idea about the fuel situation.

If I recall, the 53/54 sleeps 12. The 59 does as well (for that matter, so do their 70s and 75s). So if you're up around 11, you may want to consider the larger boat. It has noticeably more "lounging" interior space. The 53/54s have the same size tanks as the 46s.

West Canyon is rated as one of the finest canyon hikes on the whole Colorado Plateau, and its easiest accessed from Lake Powell.

Looks good.....just the sort of beta I'm in search of. Thanks!

Just off the phone with the rental place and learned lots. National parks set the pricing so there is no competition on rental prices for boats already on the water.

Fuel
Expect $200-300 in fuel max. Woman on the phone said she did a 3 day weekend for just 60 bucks in gas??????? She said they give you the boat full of fuel and you only pay for what it takes to refill the tank at the end of your trip....so that's good news. Current fuel price is 3.88 a gallon.

Powerboat special is only on 4 day rentals (doesn't say that on the website)We don't NEED a powerboat. They say boats must be on the shore at night. Rethinking how we should handle this 3 or 4 day thang. We might do a Thursday - Sunday and just be hanging nearby to pick up Friday arrivals...knowing some folks won't be available until Friday. Let me know if you could work Thursday or would want to.

Boats can be picked up between 8am and 10am. Return is due at 2pm.
