An old book from the 1940's, Earth Abides, by George R. Stewart, explored this concept. In this book, there are only a few hundred humans left on Earth, due to most of the population having died from a disease. These remaining few form small colonies. The story goes on for many decades, telling about one small group and their children and grandchildren. It is a very interesting book, and the author took great pains to create vivid scenes, such as when some of the teenagers growing up in the colony in San Francisco get a Jeep going, and drive it east. They return home after a few weeks, describing what they saw. They couldn't make it very far once they got to the midwest due to trees growing in the roadway. Packs of dogs caused problems. Food was an issue for city folks, who ate out of cans for years. There is one twist in the book where the old patriarch tries to get people to read books. He's an educated man. He finally gives up and teaches his grandsons to make bows and arrows.
You can get the book on Amazon. It is a fine book, and very cheap on Amazon. |
