Yep, you heard it correctly: I will be singing in an Opera.

The opera is is "Amahl and the Night Visitors" by Menotti. I will be playing the role of Balthazar - the "black" wise man (yes, it is a Christmas opera - so try to hold the "wise-man" irony jokes to a minimum).

There are only 6 singing roles, so I'll be on stage for the majority of the opera. It is a one-act opera that takes a little under an hour to perform.

There will be two performances both on Saturday, December 8th at 3:00 and 6:30 PM. Admission is free, but the church who is sponsoring the event is asking that you bring something to contribute to their food-bank.

The performances will be held at the Gold Canyon United Methodist Church. You can get all the info you like about the concert, their address and all that other good stuff on their website. The church is quite a venue - it's in an absolutely fabulous location and the sanctuary is enormous with seats for about 600 or so (theater-style seating - no pews).

We've been working hard on the production and it should be a lot of fun. So, if you can spare the time I'd love to see you out there, and if you can be generous in your donation to the food-bank, I'm sure they'll be happy to see you out there as well.

But, of course, the main attraction will be to see me in costume with my "black" makeup on.

I can't wait.

Oooh, Daddee in blackface. Is that politically correct these days? Can you actually sing? I'm guessing you can!

As they say in theater: "Break a leg!"

Well, unable to create my own wise man joke for Daddee I will treat you to one you can tell at the office:

In a small southern town there was a "Nativity Scene" that showed great skill and talent had gone into creating it. One small feature bothered me.

The three wise men were wearing firemen's helmets.

Totally unable to come up with a reason or explanation, I left. At a "Quik Stop" on the edge of town, I asked the lady behind the counter about the helmets. She exploded into a rage, yelling at me, "You stupid Yankees never do read the Bahble!" I assured her that I did, but simply couldn't recall anything about firemen in the Bible.

She jerked her Bible from behind the counter and ruffled through some pages, and finally jabbed her finger at a passage. Sticking it in my face she said "See, it says right here, 'The three wise men came from afar.'"

Actually - Yes, I can sing. There are even a few people on the site that have been to see me perform.

I was once a vocal performance major at ASU - a classically trained baritone.

I'm woefully out of shape compared to what I could accomplish at my peak, but I can still manage to squeak out a tune or two.

I haven't heard him but those that have say he sounds like a cross between Hank Williams, Jr. and Willie Nelson. Razz
