For the record, we did do one route...you know...since we brought our gear. I've done a bunch of routes in J-tree, and they are fun (scary). If I ever learn to trad climb, I'll do a lot more routes there. I actually prefer to climb routes over bouldering, but for some reason, I really enjoy bouldering at J-tree.

Traditional climb. Instead of the leader clipping bolts (like the routes you guys climbed at Atlantis), the leader puts pro (protection) in a crack or other feature. Some examples of pro would be cams, tri-cams, hexes, nuts, and Big Bros. Most trad climbers feel that this type of climbing is superior to sport climbing since the climber uses natural features to set protection, instead of drilling a hole to set bolt and bolt hanger. Also, a trad climber has the freedom of placing as much or as little protection as they feel comfortable with, or as much as the route will allow. I enjoy all types of climbing, so I stay out of those sort of debates.

Anyway, I hope this answers your question.

P.S. In picture #15 of my photoset, Dale has a rack of cams hanging from his harness.

Sure, that answers it. I've had lessons in some of that gear and how to select your piece. I just don't have one of those tool belts with all the jewels/charms on it like you have.

The cams are just clipped to the gear loops on the harness. No fancy tool belts for us!

Oh that's right! I do have lots o-loops.........(no YH you can't start calling me Loopy Girl) I just need to start adding some charms. I think I need my own chalk bag, too. I'm so excited to have more things to shop for. You all are the best!

I have noticed about 13 new bruises since my trip to the QCC area.

Can we talk about Belay devices here? How do I sort out which one I need or do I get a couple different ones. Seems like I have used a figure 8, an ATC and something else.

If you decide to use a Figure 8, I'll give you one. I bought one at REI this past summer for some reason. I thought I'd use it for rappelling while canyoneering, but my 8mm rope is a bit too thin for a Figure 8! So I never really used it, and I don't intend to.

I prefer an ATC. I use this one: http://www.omegapac.com/op_products_sbgii.html
I also think that this is a good ATC: http://www.blackdiamondequipment.com/gear/atc_xp.php
I'm sure you've used these at the climbing gym: http://en.petzl.com/petzl/SportProduits?Produit=203
A Grigri is a bit more pricey, but I think it'd be perfect for you. Another similar device is this one: http://www.trango.com/prod.php?id=102
It's a little less expensive than a Grigri, but it works the same and works just as well.

If I were you, I'd consider an ATC or Grigri type belay device over a Figure 8. It's easier to mess up while using a Figure 8. I suppose if you bought a Grigri, you'd need an ATC anyway; it's hard to rappel with a Grigri.

Hey - how about an unofficial gound school to play with gear ?

I want to rapel down a waterfall some day ...

Matt so then you are suggesting an ATC is more all purpose? I sort of felt more secure with the figure 8 but not sure why. Yeah, I'll take your figure 8.

Yeah, I guess you could say that an ATC is "all-purpose." A figure 8 is basically the same idea, I just think it's harder to do something wrong with an ATC than a Figure 8. But if you're comfortable with the 8, then cool.
Yes, you can definitely have mine. I can't imagine ever using it.
