Sunset Point Rest Area to Close for Year-Long Renovation

The Sunset Point Rest Area along Interstate 17 north of Black Canyon City will close for approximately one year starting Monday, November 5, for a major renovation and remodeling project. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) says initial work to improve the rest area will include the construction of a new restroom building and new scenic overlook area. ADOT recommends motorists who travel I-17 use facilities north of the rest area in Cordes Junction (Exit 262) and the McGuireville Rest Area north of Camp Verde; as well as Black Canyon City and Rock Springs to the south (Exit 244). ADOT recognizes the closure of the rest area is inconvenient for travelers, and asks for their patience as ADOT renovates this facility to better serve the needs of travelers on I-17 in the future. The rest area opened in 1970 and was originally designed to last 20 years without major renovations. ADOT has since identified parts of the rest area that need repairs and remodeling, including new water, sewer, phone and electrical services. Sunset Point Rest Area has been closed in the past for temporary repairs. This project will allow ADOT to improve public health and safety on a more permanent basis. On average, 3,100 vehicles and approximately 7,500 people visit the rest area each day.
Other improvements that are part of the $5.2 million renovation project include: Two new picnic ramadas-New sidewalks and landscape features-New pavement, striping and signage - Reconstruction of the parking lot to accommodate more traffic- Construction of a new 60,000 gallon water tank and pump house.

Todd, looks like you're going to have to find a bush.
