Deanda and I had a rendevous with Matt H and Liz at Magma mine road this morning about 9am. We drove almost to the Resolution Copper site and parked at the side of the road, then hiked in to do some outdoor climbs. Matt lead up a 5.6 and setup a toprope. Then he belayed while Liz did the climb.
Liz belayed me on the climb. What a blast. There was a cool light wind, clean air, a couple of vultures circling to watch my technique. My 5.10s gripped the rock like glue. There were some great holes and ledges to provide plenty of holds to make the climb. Liz gave me a smooth ride down after I reached the anchor. Deanda was next to test her shoes. Like me, she was amazed at how well they gripped compared to the holds at the rock gym. She didn't reach the anchor but did make it about 30 feet up the climb.
A couple of Matt's friends showed up and we moved to another rock to climb. Overall we did about half a dozen different climbs, ending with a 5.9. Matt led the climb and set the anchor. Liz, Clint, and Isabelle all shredded it. I managed to reach the anchor after just two falls. I kept getting stuck at one point but after the second slip, I saw a grip a foot above where I had been reaching. I set my left foot on a thin edge and leaped up to establish a secure grip in a 3 inch deep crack. The boost to my confidence and determination allowed me to finish out the climb.
I'll try to post pictures tomorrow. _________________ It is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring. -- Carl Sagan |
