Please, please, if you feed your dog or cat "Wet pet Food" canned or in foil or Mylar packages, switch to dry dog foods. I've heard the recall of the "Wet Food" from Menu may kill thousands of dogs and cats.

Here's a site that lists the recalled products, though I've heard the list is growing daily!

Looks like Fancy Feast is safe, based on that list...

This list of recalled foods was originally 19; now it's up to 53 and growing daily!
We know highly processed foods aren't good for us; why do we think they're good for our pets? Check the ingredients in most dog foods; wheat, rice, corn, etc. When was the last time your heard of a wolf, coyote, fox raiding a wheat field? They raid chicken coops and eat the chicken, bones and all! A canine's digestives system, over tens of thousands of years, has evolved to digest raw foods, bones and all; cooked bones are a definite No! No! Cooking makes the bones brittle and virtually indigestible and non-biodegradable! You think when a coyote catches a rabbit it spits out the bones? No! It digests them.

Rich has been on a BARF (Biologically appropriate raw foods) diet for over three years; typical breakfast is a raw chicken wing or neck. Evening diet varies.....1/4 of a raw lamb shank; raw beef heart; chicken gizzards and hearts; canned salmon, unbleached raw tripe and beef offal. (raw fresh salmon can contain flukes) a mixture of vegetables and fruits; canned pumpkin; I'll bake a sweet potato and cut it into chunks that I'll freeze and feed once every week or so. Raw chicken egg, shell and all. (Canines in the wild eat everything, including the contents of their preys' stomachs which usually contain semi-digested veggies and fruits)

I don't feed my animals canned foods thankfully. They only get dried science diet natures recipe. At one point I was making them homemade food (all organic). It was becoming a chore especially when we went out of town and had to make enough for the pet sitter to feed them.

I hope this food doesn't cause too much more deaths or sickness, this is really a sad story. Unfortunately, this can lead to chronically ill pets which will lead to the pet owners to make a tough decision. Sad

Agreed. My dog gets dry food mainly, with occasional treats like chicken, salmon, etc. Cats get some Fancy Feast and then a special urinary dry food, since one of the cats had some kidney stones. Hopefully the pet owners out there (not just on this site) will take a look at that list and make sure that they're food is not recalled (or if it is, take appropriate action).

Sad for the animals.

It'll be interesting to see the lawsuits for vet bills and the loss of pets that will be coming in the next few weeks. I'm guessing more then one company will be going out of business.

ALBANY, N.Y. - Rat poison was found in the pet food suspected of causing kidney failure that killed at least 16 cats and dogs, but scientists still don't know how it got there, state officials said Friday.

The toxin was identified as aminopterin, which is used to kill rats in some countries, state Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker said.

Aminopterin is not registered for killing rodents in the United States, according to the Environmental Protection Agency, though it is used as a cancer drug. State officials wouldn't speculate on how the toxin got into Menu Foods' now-recalled pet food but said no criminal investigations had been launched. advertisement

Scientists at the New York State Animal Health Diagnostic Center at Cornell and at the New York State Food Laboratory tested three cat food samples provided by Menu Foods and found Aminopterin in two of them. Hooker said they would test individual components of the pet food, as well. The early test results were released to give veterinarians a better idea of how to treat sick animals.

"Any amount of this product is too much in food," Hooker said.

Aminopterin, also used as a cancer drug, is highly toxic in high doses. It inhibits the growth of malignant cells and suppresses the immune system.

In dogs and cats, it can cause kidney failure, according to Donald Smith, dean of Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine.

The Food and Drug Administration has said the investigation into the pet deaths was focusing on wheat gluten in the pet food. Wheat gluten itself would not cause kidney failure, but the common ingredient could have been contaminated, the FDA said.

Bob Rosenberg, senior vice president of government affairs for the National Pest Management Association, said he had never heard of the substance before Friday.

"It would make no sense to spray a crop itself with rodenticide," Rosenberg said, though he said grain shippers typically put bait stations around the perimeter of their storage facilities.

The pet deaths led to a recall of 60 million cans and pouches of pet food produced by Menu Foods and sold throughout North America under 95 brand names. There have been several reports of kidney failure in pets that ate the recalled brands, and the company has confirmed the deaths of 15 cats and one dog.

Menu Foods last week recalled "cuts and gravy" style dog and cat food. The recall sparked concern among pet owners across North America. It includes food sold under store brands carried by Wal-Mart, Kroger, Safeway and other large retailers, as well as private labels such as Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba.

The company, already facing lawsuits, planned a media teleconference for later Friday, a spokesman said. It is majority owned by Menu Foods Income Fund of Streetsville.

A complete list of the recalled products along with product codes, descriptions and production dates was posted online by Menu Foods and is available at http://tinyurl.com/2pn6mm. The company also designated two phone numbers that pet owners could call for information: (866) 463-6738 and (866) 895-2708.

A spokesman for New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said he was not aware of any criminal investigation involving the tainted food. FBI spokesman Paul Holstein in Albany said Friday he was not aware of any FBI involvement in the case.

"I don't know where we'll go from here," he said.

An already aging and weak system was shut down entirely by the bad cat/dog food that was recalled all
over the US last week. It’s a little upsetting but at 21.5 yrs old, we knew the end was near. We
were just glad to send her off with much love!!

No wonder my dogs in India were hale and hearty -- they ate what we ate ( Veggies n such) and what they hunted -- birds, bunnies...100% BARF! Confused

I'd love to switch but feeding 160 lbs of muscle (2 dogs) is quite a bit of BARF Confused and I don't think my dogsitter will deal with BARF...
