For anyone interested, I've added a new page to my web site with stories of the antics and predicaments Lady, Bo and Dew have been involved in over the years.
Also a tribute to Strider

Thanks for sharing your wonderful time with them. Sad to hear Dew is being consumed by cancer but she is definitely spending her time in the best company! _________________ Photos: http://www.pbase.com/desertgirl/galleries

Losing Lady, Bo and Strider, and being on the verge of losing Dew is heartbreaking to me. Though their loss leaves a big empty hole in my life, they will forever live and be loved in my heart. No other dog can replace Lady, nor Bo , nor Strider, nor Dew, just as none of them could replace Star. Each is/was an individual with his or her own unique personality and place in my life. Many dog lovers in my situation would say, "Never again! I can't go through this!". I've seen and heard it many times, even from my own parents; and I've seen these same dog lovers, a few months later, with a new dog in their lives.....not a replacement for the beloved pet they lost, but to help fill the void left in their lives by that loss.
I know myself better than to say "never again". Basenjis have been a major part of my life for over twenty-five years and I don't see that ending anytime soon.
I'm fortunate to have many, many caring friends.....Basenjis owners and breeders among them. Two of those friends, Myrl and Glenda Galdeen of Glenmyr Basenjis, have offered me a gorgeous six year old male, Rich, from their kennel, and I intend to take them up on it. Not right away.....they live in Michigan and I don't go anyplace in winter where "Mud Room" is an everyday part of the vocabulary! Plus, right now, my attention has to be on Dew and her welfare, tricking her into eating until all my tricks are used up and she joins her mother, brother, Strider and Star. So, I expect next spring I'll load up the motorhome and head for "Rich". Nothing's certain yet; I believe an older dog has the right to choose its new owner and so the final decision is pretty much up to Rich and how he accepts this old dog.....me! If he does, then I will look for a little girl Basenji, probably a rescue, close to Rich's age, to keep Rich and I in line, a job female Basenjis are very good at.
Ch Glemyr Adieu to Mullins....RICH _________________ John Richardson and Richie Rich, El Perro de Playero

John,
You are the most awesome "handler/Dad" that any of your Besenjis could have asked for... ever. I could see that with Dew. Absolutley beautiful dogs. You just keep doing what you do. You were definitely put on this here earth for that. They deserve it and love you for it.
You deserve it (the good times). Just take it as it comes. Life hands out it's "curve balls" all of the time. You're no different than anyone else. You definitely make a mark in everyone's life you come across.
Hope I made some kind of sense. Bud. |

Go to any insane asylum in the country and tell them you own Basenjis and they have to admit you! They are NOT naturally obedient and you'll rarely see them in the obedience ring at any dog show. Few Basenji owners are masochistic enough to attempt it. Fact is, I've seen a few Basenjis in obedience and have yet to see one that didn't look totally miserable. The old style of choke chains and force simply will not work with a Basenji. Blatant bribary is about the only way and even then if something else catches their attention, forgedaboutit! The most fully obedience trained Basenji in the world, if off lead, would take off after a cottontail, or like critter, and all the voice commands in the world would have no effect.....and I wouldn't have it any other way! _________________ John Richardson and Richie Rich, El Perro de Playero

John,
Basenji's attitude seems to jive with my Weim's. I'd hate to modify the personality of any breed...you got to love them for who they are ...( Bad behavior -- defined in rather genorous terms may be worth correction). I know my Weim is the absolute "Velcro Wiem"....he will not be more than a few inches away when I am around ...I just had to get used to it and now I dont even notice ( except when we duke it out as to who gets into the bathroom
Dogs bring so much joy!! The world is definitely a better place with them! How can you ever ignore a wet nose ? _________________ Photos: http://www.pbase.com/desertgirl/galleries
