OK, maybe I'm just an idiot, but I can't seem to get an image small enough to load for my avatar. I shot a picture this past weekend in my camera's worst/lowest setting. I reduced the image size in photoshop until it said the image size was 13.4 Kb. It still wouldn't load, and I get the "file size must be lower than 15kb" warning. Mad

How do you get an image that small? Even my cell phone shoots images that are larger than that! Confused

If the size is small enough, check the dimensions to see if they are exceded

To paraphrase fairweather: When I hear the word "avatar" I reach for my .38. Wish they'd find a different name for it. And, oh, Matt, Mike resized mine for me. Maybe someone would do that for you if you say pretty please?

There are others that have more expertise at this than I.....but--crop, reduce the image size down to about an inch by an inch and then reduce the resolution to get your picture down to 15k.

If there is a better way I would love to see the directions posted here.

The dimensions of the picture were 0.6" x 0.7something". Surely it doesn't need to be microscopic...does it?

Here's the official guideline ...

Displays a small graphic image below your details in posts. Only one image can be displayed at a time, its width can be no greater than 100 pixels, the height no greater than 100 pixels, and the file size no more than 15 KB

You might need to size it to a 100 pixelx100 pixel as well ...Its not just the file size that is the limit[/b]

See, Matt, I TOLD YOU SO!!! Very Happy

I am currently trying to learn how to crop photos of small items for ebay. Anyone who can tell me an easy way how to do it please pm me. I have gotten as far as right clicking the picture, opening with Paint. (Someone told me that Paint would allow me to crop, but I don't see any word like "crop" in Paint.) I have Windows XP. My problem is the only way to get small items in focus is to take the photo from some distance away, with my current camera. So I can get the photo in focus by being further away, now I need to remove all the unwanted edges. (It is beyond me why this stuff has to be so complicated! Evil or Very Mad )

Uh, I'm really brainfarting here. Where do I put the attachment? I'm used to Hotmail and attachments...I don't see that option here, so I'm completely lost.

Size it to 99 pixels on the longest side and they do a Save for Web in PS. You can fiddle with the quality but you don't need to go higher than 50%. You should be well below 15kb.
