FLAGSTAFF - A 57-year-old man who had been living in a cave in the Coconino National Forest for more than a decade has been evicted.
For 11 years, Thomas J. Crawford made his home in a cave. Federal authorities say he had a bed, books and clothes arranged on hangers. He even had pots and cutlery for cooking in his cave home.
On Friday, he was arrested for using a national forest for residential purposes after a Flagstaff resident reported a suspicious camp in a remote drainage on Mount Elden.
Crawford pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court on Monday and was sentenced to one year of probation and was banned from the forest.
During the hearing, he said he lived in the forest by choice.
He told Forest Service officials they he would come to Flagstaff every week or so to get supplies and water. Sometimes, he would work here.
Crawford was allowed to remove his possessions after he was released from jail Tuesday.
A crew will be going up to the cave in the coming weeks to clean the site, said Forest Service spokeswoman Raquel Poturalski.
On with the house hunting I say

Bummer. Would have been cool to live there...for a week maybe, not for 11 years though. Crazy how he lived there all those years and he is now just finally getting caught. Shouldn't you be able to live where you want to though? _________________ "IRONMAN" cometh, hiketh, destroyeth |

If he went 11 years with out being noticed, what was he hurting?
If he was smart, he would have told the judge he moved every 14 days and is just on a very long camping trip. Camping is allowed almost anywhere in the forest as long as you are not in the same spot for more then 14 consecutive days.
Several RV folks make the Phon D Sutton rec area on the salt river their winter home. They just move their RV to the other side of the parking lot every 14 days. They are no more or less of a problem then this guy was. _________________

I agree with Daryl. Good for him to have survived that long. |

Hey - don't knock the comforts of a good cave. Fresh air, rent is cheap, low heating/cooling costs, natural wall treatments, not too many neighbors, no landscaping required - all kinds of benefits.
Of course mildew is always a bit of a problem, and then there is the bat guano and all the insects - but hey - every home has a flaw or two.... _________________ "Only small minds want always to be right."

Almost seems like a fair trade off if it means no more inconsiderate neighbors. |
