See - now this is exactly why I didn't want to get involved.

I try as hard as I can to leave politics out of any discussion thread. Especially discussions about political parties. There is NEVER a good ending to those posts.

Now we're going to have a war of words and quotes and maybe images.

Case in point - Arianna Huffington running for Govenor of California (but hey, who isn't these days...) just leveled the single wors insult she could dredge up about Arnold: He is a friend of the Bush Administration! (the horror!)

Honestly - how can there be honest and meaningful discussion between people who by their very political nature think that the worst thing you can be is a member of the opposite party?

The worst part is that it's all rhetoric. Politicians from both sides constantly voto on issues that are against their partie's respective philosophy. Not to mention that within each party are varying degrees and flavors of philosophy. How can you possibly, in today's political climate, label someone as 100% Democrat or Republican? It just can't be done.

Democrats are for restricting free trade and catering to unions. Clinton ratified NAFTA (which unions hated).
Republicans are all about free trade and open markets. Bush put in the biggest trade restrictions and tarriffs in decades.

Good Golly Miss Molly?

Politicians are all the same (with very few and very rare exceptions) - spout the rhetoric that best speaks to your target demographic. It doesn't matter how you vote on the actual issues when in office, as long as you spew out the right verbage when talking to your constituents.

Political rhetoric sucks.

I cannot point out a better example of the pathetic nature of the loudest voices of political activity than these excellent videos on the subject. Make sure you have a fast internet connection and Quicktime installed. Then sit in awe of the stupidity of some folks.

Granted - these are not professional politicians, but they are examples of the type of hatred that is generated by political philosophy.

Oh, I know we generally show admirable restraint here at AZH - but you never know when things could get out of control.

I know you and Colin probably won't engage each other in a flame war - but there are many people on this site, and who knows if one of them might take offense?

I know we can't protect everyone from ever taking offense at something we say - but, with some topics it is far easier to give offense than with others. I have found that out the hard way (as have others)

I just thought it was a funny quote. As are the one's Stan posted. To get upset about it would be trite. While I look forward to outside related input from most anyone on here, my political beliefs are my own, and other's aren't really going to change my mind....so a flame war b/w Stan and I...not unless it's at the Chilli cook-off Embarassed

The Ant and the Grasshopper Fable updated

OLD VERSION:

The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his
house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks he's
a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the
ant is warm and well fed.

The grasshopper has no food or shelter so he dies out in the cold.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Be responsible for yourself!

MODERN VERSION:

The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his
house and laying up supplies for the winter. The grasshopper thinks he's
a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away. Come winter, the
shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why
the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while others are cold
and starving.

CBS, NBC, and ABC show up to provide pictures of the shivering
grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a
table filled with food.

America is stunned by the sharp contrast.

How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper
is allowed to suffer so? Kermit the Frog appears on Oprah with the
grasshopper, and everybody cries when they sing "It's Not Easy Being
Green."

Jesse Jackson stages a demonstration in front of the ant's house where
the news stations film the group singing "We shall overcome". Jesse then
has the group kneel down to pray to God for the grasshopper's sake.

Tom Daschle & Walter Mondale exclaim in an interview with Peter Jennings
that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both
call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his "fair
share".

Finally, the EEOC drafts the "Economic Equity and Anti-Grasshopper Act",
retroactive to the beginning of the summer. The ant is fined for failing
to hire a proportionate number of green bugs and, having nothing left to
pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated by the government.

Hillary gets her old law firm to represent the grasshopper in a
defamation suit against the ant, and the case is tried before a panel of
federal judges that Bill appointed from a list of single-parent welfare
recipients.

The ant loses the case.

The story ends as we see the grasshopper finishing up the last bits of
the ant's food while the government house he is in, which just happens
to be the ant's old house, crumbles around him because he doesn't
maintain it.

The ant has disappeared in the snow.

The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident and the house,
now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize the
once-peaceful neighborhood.

MORAL OF THE STORY: Vote Republican
