Howdy,
We're interested in doing a backpacking trip on the Rim, but don't know which trail would take us to the best views. (Payson/260 area) General Crook trail is so long that I'm not sure where to pick it up, if this is the best trail for the Rim. Any suggestions? Thanks a bunch. Very Happy

If you have never been there yet, one of the nicest trails and destinations is Horton Creek to Horton Spring. You can camp at a number of places on that trail or go all the way to the Spring and camp there. Water is always available along this trail. Horton is very popular and you will not be alone. To get the views you want you can day hike from your campsite to the highline trail turning east to it's intersection with the Promontory Butte and do the steep climb up to the Butte where the views are spectacular.

If you have a high clearance vehicle you can drive to the Butte by taking FR300 (Rim Road) from 260 to left on FR76 out to various places on the Butte where you can camp, but bring your own water here.

Also there are Forest Service campgrounds along FR300 in the vicinity of the signed Military Sinkhole. In this area you can hike along the rim for miles and get all the viewing you can imagine.
I'm sure others will offer more ideas.

If going to Promontory area please check with ranger station first to be sure it's open. I believe it is completely closed to all types of access at this time due to severe fire danger. But Horton should be open.
