I know Humphrey's is the tallest in AZ, but what are the other top 9 peaks in the state? Does anyone know? I was thinking I would try to get to the top of all of them with in the next few years just for fun and to give myself a new goal.

Also, I know there is a ski lift that goes to the top, but is there a trail to the top of Agassiz Peak in Flag?
Thanks

You might find this website helpful, it lists all the highest peaks/deepest canyons...I've been (slowly) making my way through the list...

One thing to note about the 20 peaks on that site: they're not the 20 highest, but the 20 highest hikeable peaks. Agassiz, which is the second highest peak in Arizona, is not on the list because it is closed to hiking due to sensative tundra. The same is true for other peaks in the San Franciscos; Freemont, Aubineau and Doyle.

Here is a list of most of Arizona's highest 100. I have noticed quite a few missing peaks, Like Mount Elden. They also don't list any of the unnamed summits in the 100 highest. Another mistake is Navajo Mountain is found in Utah, not Arizona. There are some mountains also with wrong elevations.

I have done Arizona's 4 highest (aubineau and Rees dont count as offical peaks and i have not done them.) It is possible to do Agassiz and not get caught, but its up to you if its worth the risk. Also Mount Baldy has a wrong elevation given on the USGS map. USGS survayed the wrong point. It has been measured to be 11,403 feet. This summit sits on the reservation and is illigal to climb. The actual summit is estamated at 11,420 feet and sits north of the other summit, just off the reservation and thus is legal to climb.

There are others in the highest 10 that are not legal to climb cuz they are on indian reservation in the White Mountains.

I have a list of the actual 10 highest, but i cannot find it now, I will post it when I do find it.

You'll not be able to summit Mt. Baldy, which is the second highest mountain once you leave the San Francisco Peaks. You can get real close though. The summit is on the White Mountain Apache reservation and they consider it sacred. I believe the summit is close to 11,000 ft.

Good info guys. Thanks. I guess I have hiked two on that list then. Heliograph and Chiricahua. I'm not that big into the canyons, but i'd like to do all the peaks forsure. How rough would Humphrey's be for a dog? Also how long does it take round trip? It's like 9 miles right?

Jamie,
I did Humphreys with a friend and his dog (cattle dog/mix) right after the first snow in Oct 01. about 1 foot at the top.
His dog loved it, it was cold at the top, we only stayed for a few milk bones Laughing Once we started down Tyson was all over, chasing clumps of snow that were falling out of the trees, and running after birds. I would say it is a fairly easy dog trip, you need to be the judge of the toughness on your dogs pads, it is fairly rocky near the top. R/T is about 9 miles .... 6 up & 3 down Smile

Here is Arizona's higest 10. This is going by the 300 foot rule. A peak must rise 300 feet from the saddle to be concidered a peak.

1. Humphreys Peak.....12633
2. Agassiz Peak..........12356
3. Fremont Peak.........11969
4. Doyle Peak.............11460
5. Mount Baldy............11403 (actual peak estamated at 11,420)
6. Mount Ord..............11357
7. Paradise Butte........11150
8. Peak 10932...........10932
9. Escudilla Mountain..10912
10. Mount Graham......10720

Here is a list of the highest 10 that is legal (that I know of.)

1. Humphreys Peak.....12633
2. Doyle Peak.............11460
3. Mount Baldy............11420
4. Escudilla Mountain...10912
5. Mount Graham........10720
6. Kendrick Peak.........10418
7. Greens Peak...........10133
8. (Thick Top).............10092
9. Webb Peak.............10030
10. Heliograph Peak.....10022

Thick Top is in () because its an unofficial name. It's currently unnamed. I have added Mount Baldy because it's actual summit is not 11,403 and does not sit on reservation land. USGS survayed the wrong point and the actual peak is only estimated. Its one half the distance to the next contour line.

Getting "high" on the peaks or really getting "high" on the peaks is the real question we should be asking here!

Plummer,
I doubt anyone's going to touch that comment, even with a 10 foot roachclip! Shocked

I've heard a few people mention taking the ski lift up at Snow Bowl, does this actually go to the top of Humprhrey's or near it? And can you access the Weatherford trail from the ski lift drop off point?

Thanks

The ski lift goes up to an elevation near the that of the saddle, but maybe half a mile away. The forest service doesn't want people hiking from the top of the ski lift because of some endangered plants found up there. Unfortunately, the trail is the only way to get up there, at least in the summer. I suppose in the winter you could post hole through the snow, but that sure sounds like a lot of work...

I'm looking forward to this Saturday, when I'll be hiking up to the summit with some friends. Ought to be fun!!

Hey we'll be up there this weekend too. But we going to try to hike it on Sunday. Have a great hike Hnak.

Thanks for the info. about the lift. I didn't want the free ride, just was curious if the lift could be useful if there an emergency or for scouting.

Hope you had a great hike yesterday! I sure did on Saturday...

Was it really crowded on Sunday too?

I took a look at the top of the ski lift. It's almost the same elevation at the saddle, maybe a bit lower, but it looks to be an 'interesting' scramble across a steep talus slope from there to the saddle.

This was a fun hike. The previous weekend I had driven over to Lone Pine CA, and hiked Mt. Whitney on the 12th. While the trail up Humphreys is shorter (4.5 miles vs. 11 each way), I noticed that the section from the saddle to the summit is noticably steeper and rougher than anything on the Whitney trail. Both summits had incredible views.... Hank

We had a great time too Hank. There weren't that many people becuase clouds were already over the mtn and it was raining a little at 10am. We saw more people coming up in the afternoon as we were heading down though.

Didn't make to the summit unfortunately. While we were on the saddle, everyone hair stated standing on end so we high tailed it back down to tree line. Pretty spooky. We had rain and thunderstorm activity the entire hike. Then, ofcourse as luck would have it, about a half an hour after we started our decent, the clouds began to clear. UG! If we would of just slept in a bit longer or taking a little more time getting up we would have been able to get to the peak. Oh well, another day.
