It may just be a new requirement. I'm guessing it's a video about not picking up unspent ordinance due to the dangers. If it explodes it could kill and anyone not killed will be prosecuted! Smile Since you've had a permit in the past they may assume your survival means you behaved yourself. Anyway, I'll post what I find out when I call the downtown office on Tuesday. If I have to watch a video, I'll watch it.

Due to a lot of day to day changes I may be bagging Death Valley; and the 10 hour drive. I have this Thurs Fri off so may be on the Camino doing a dayhike or backpack trip there and may stop by Cabeza Prieta office on Thurs if I have time. It'll also give me a chance to locate entrance to the drive as I recall was vaque to locate in the dark.
Got a caving gig this next weekend too so not sure if I can fit it all in.
I'll report back re: what I find out if I get to Ajo.

Watch out for the speed trap in Ajo--we got nabbed last weekend--$140 for going 45 in a 35. MP

Well, my fault for telling you to send app to Phoenix instead of Ajo; I just figured the turn around time would be lots longer than it turned out to be and when Letty got hers back in three days I went ahead and sent mine to Ajo. Sorry!

THE PLAN

As it stands right now here is how I see it shaping up--

Meet Sat at 6:00 at Cabeza Prieta parking lot; main drag in Ajo. We will depart from there ASAP, part of my group is planning on camping a few miles in on the road and we will be rounding them up on our way.

I don't plan on stopping much in the first 44 miles, that being at Dave O'Neill's grave site. I encourage everyone to stop, take pictures, drive slowly, whatever. See what you want. I think we will have enough radios to stay in touch. If you want to stop at Bates Well, please do so. I know we will spread out, if nothing else because of the dust of the road. The road is easy to follow, there are only a couple of spots we can talk about.

I don't have formal plans for lunch but suggest we stop on the Pinacate Lava Flow. Here and at Las Playas will be some slow driving. We can group up, maybe take a short walk out on the playa. A really fascinating place.

Tule Well, our planned campsite for Sat nite, is about 72 miles out. I plan on leading but the rule is the first one to Tule Well sets time, I would like everyone in camp within an hour of the first vehicle's arrival. If someone slips thru the net we will assume a mechanical problem and I will go back to find them.
Some in my group want to hike to the Tule Tanks, important water hole for the sand Papago, and others in prehistoric times. If we get in early enough this might be an evening walk, or a morning one. I do not think it a long way from Tule Well.

The following day we have about 40 miles left, some sand driving, but good road too. We'll plan to stop at Tinaja Altas on our way out, and I know we will want to take pics at the tanks along the route out to Wellton if they are still there.

Suggested reading: John Annineros' "Adventuring in Arizona"; the falcon guide "Hiking Arizona's Cactus Country" and the Backcounry Adventure Arizona--a 4wd/Suv driving guide---all contain references to the El Camino

This will be a most excellent adventure that I can't wait to share with ya'll----looking forward to it!!!!!

I now have the permit having watched the video! Yahoo! -- They actually stamp the card with "Approved" and a big red "Video" stamp...Hopefully Hooli, you don't have a problem with having not watched the "Video"

I am looking forward to this adventure ....
