Dew, Strider and I arrived home Sunday afternoon. Here's a copy of the e-mail I sent Sabina, the Basenji Club of No. California rescue person this afternoon

Sabina, like you I found it hard to believe Strider could make it over my fence, so I ran a little test; snuck out an watched from around the corner and this 29 pound dude wiggled and squirmed his way through the bars of the gate! Four inch space between bars! Houdini lives! Anyway, panel from an old X-pen fit perfectly over the gate and is now heavily wired in place. But that's not the end of the story.
I started desensitizing him to my leaving by going out into the garage for just a few minutes and then returning. He'd howl, but stop after a few minutes and I'd wait 'til the howling stopped. About the third time, I came in the house and........no Strider! He'd dug UNDER the gate! Found him sniffing around some bushes and he comes with no problem; it's obvious from his two escapes he's looking for me 'cause as soon as he sees me he omes running with curly tail wagging like crazy! Very Happy Now a second X-pen panel is staked under the gate making it impossible to dig and no way is he gonna dig under a concrete block fence. Been working more today on desensitizing and it's working well. Went to the store, snuck back in and found he and Dew catching rays on the patio. Did the same later to pick up some stuff and when I returned he was curled up on a dog bed in my office. Hasn't bothered garbage; went after a hanging towel, was told NO! and hasn't touched it since.
Also sitting quietly while I brush his teeth, and then gets half a Pet Tab! Such a good boy! Sleeps well with Dew and I and under the covers.
Good hard thirty minute walks with Dew and I yesterday a.m. and this a.m. Think he was still a little tired from his golf course explorations yesterday afternoon. Loves playing tug of war and fetch with one of four Vermont Chewmen I have.

Hooli, glad to hear you're getting things straightened out with the dogs over there at Lizard Ranch. Now if those dogs would just work on you. I've got a great story to tell you about my old nickname "Ty". I'll tell it to you the next time we hike.

I can't wait to meet the Hooligans. Sounds like they're good people...probably better company than some folks I've met (primarily politicians)

Took Dew and Strider to the vets this a.m. for check on Dew's liver condition and just a general checkup on the new guy in town, Strider. Dew still has no palpable mass in her abdomen which is great news; Beer if she has a liver tumor it's very slow growing and looking more like, maybe, chronic hepatitis, and I'm not gonna put her through biopsy just to satisfy curiosity. She's eating like there's no tomorrow! Very Happy Will continue her on prednison, vitamin E, and Milk Thistle.
Strider is hypothyroid, which I knew when I got him. No big deal and easily medicated with a small, cheap pill twice a day. And he's otherwise in good health. Really a sweet boy. Even the vet commented that my 'senjis are the calmest and most easily handled he's ever met. Sleeping Glad Strider's keeping up the family tradition!
