So what's your opinion of the new mountain?

What will you call it and what is your idea of a new name for it?

I thought it was a good idea, but then I questioned whether Lori would have wanted it that way. My guess is probably not.

I liked the idea of "Veterans Peak".
Peace Peak, Peace Mountain, boy that sure sounds tree huggerish.

evenstar will probably suggest Hooli Hill but I think not.

Todd, I kinda felt the same way you did, Veterans Peak, or Freedom Peak, so I suppose they're going to rename the "Parkway" too?

I like Piestewa. There are already too many places and things named Freedom and Liberty and Veterans. Piestewa sounds good and now is a good time to change the name. Yes there were other Arizona soldiers to die in this war, but she is special and very deserving of the honor. She is special because she was the first Native American Female Soldier to die in combat and she is from Arizona. I for one am tired of "Squaw" as a name. How appropriate it is to give the mountain a new name, yet keep it Native American. It is a perfect time to change the name. I think it would be cool if all of those who feel that the name change is not right would just protest by not hiking there anymore! I wonder how less crowded it would be. Probably not much. So quit crying, shut up and enjoy the nice new sound of Piestewa Peak!

Well put, Stan!
I agree that the change from "squaw", to "Piestewa" is especially appropriate because she was a Native American woman.
I think it sounds good, too.

I'm with Stan...I usually don't jump on bandwagons, but it seems right in this case. It is unique.

Well, my problem isn't with the name - they can do what they want there. My question is of the whole legality of the thing. The whole incident created quite the brouhaha with at least one resignation over the whole thing and several people quite peeved.

I won't go into the gory details - lets just say that I wouldn't have any problem with the name if the normal, legal channels had been followed and not the manner in which it was actually executed.

Also - this quote is quite funny actually under the circumstances:
Quote:
"Those structures are not permanent, they can easily be torn down or destroyed," Johnson said. "But the peak will be here forever."

Uh...yea...but they could always change the name again...

I was surprised that the name was changed this soon...I figured the surge of interest would pass, then swell again after the 5 year waiting period to change a name passed...

I'm in favor of the change either way, and, it seems to be an appropriate selection.

I like that it is a unique name, there is a high level of repetition in Arizona place names...

I like it --just hope everyone learns to pronounce it Smile I hear hoppy for Hopi and kay-bab for Kaibab all the time.
