Tonto National Forest has available now a 2004 edition of Tonto National Forest visitors map. I picked one up today at the Mesa Ranger District for $ 6.00. Have not had a chance to review it yet.

John,

Is this map for Tonto in entirety? Just wondering.

I have the TNF map of the Supes but prefer the Beartooth map. I'd be interested in your opinion.

Thanks for the info. I will get one. I have a 2000 edition which is probably close, but there have been a lot of trail changes in the TNF and its' good to have a map with the most recent version of the trials as they are today.

The map is for the entire Tonto National Forest. The map is a Planimetric type showing mainly horizontal features (boundaries, cities, roads, trails, etc) and with little or no indications of relief (vertical features). The map is an excellent guide showing the locations of designated trailheads, trails, campgrounds etc.

The Beartooth map is a topographical type map. Topographical maps shows location (horizontal) and elevation (vertical relief) using contour lines (points of equal elevation).

Both maps have strengths and weakness. In the fire service when dealing with hazardous materials emergencies we utilize several reference materials to develop a plan of action.

For example you may use a Arizona Map to plan your route from Chandler to the area North of Saguaro Lake, the Tonto National Forest Map to plan your route from the Beeline Hi-way to the Four Peaks Wilderness. And the Beartooth map to plan your hike in the Four Peaks Wilderness.

When utilizing maps for trip plans remember to indicate the maps and the edition of the maps you are using. If you are overdue from your return, the search and rescue folks will have a better idea of where to look.
