I'm proposing the weekend of August 6th for a fun hike up Granite Mountain, here near Prescott. If you'd like to escape the heat and hike through the ponderosa pines, let me know...

We could camp near Granite Mountain Friday and/or Saturday nights, or just come up for a day hike.

Or, for the really adventurous, we could hike up on Saturday, camp out at my secret campsite on Granite Mountain (known only to the general public), and hike down Sunday morning...

Ok I will be there, but Cindy won't. Is this at 7:30 or 8:00? I like 8:00, but that is just me, and gives me time to roll out of bed and drive up there.

You can meet us at I-17 and Denny's at 5:30 if you like. Unless someone else needs company for the ride up. Otherwise, come with us. Tonto has room.

I think it's paved all the way. Very Happy (but I've never been there, so I can't swear to it)

Think Tracy is correct, If I remember correctly, it is paved. But that sf iffy these days (the memory that is)

Have a good time all, would join in if I could. If you do camp at the secret camp place, have fun. It looked like a nice cozy spot, if it is the one I am remembering.

Tibber who is Tonto? Your trusty metal Steed, I am presuming? That's cute! Thought I was one of the few who did that Wink

In the words of Winnie the Pooh..."What about lunch?" Woo Hoo!

I realize we will likely need munchies/food on the trail...but are we going to (in typical AZH tradition) go out to eat AFTER the hike as well???? dunno

It's a long drive back to Phoenix...If I'm famished after the hike, I could run off the road!! Yikes!

Yes, the road is paved all the way to the trail head. Following is a set of directions to get to the trail head:

1. Take I-17 N toward Flagstaff around 60 miles.
2. Merge onto AZ-69 N via EXIT 262 toward Prescott, proceed 21.5 mi.
3. Turn right onto Fain Rd. and proceed 7.3 miles. Fain Rd is 0.7 miles past E Village Creek Blvd. If you reach Prescott Gun Club Rd you've gone about 1.1 miles too far. This road (Fain Road) bypasses Prescott Valley and Prescott, and reduces the travel time significantly.
4. Fain Rd becomes AZ-89-ALT W (or 89A). Proceed another 7 miles.
5. AZ-89-ALT W (89A) becomes Pioneer Parkway. Proceed another 4 miles.
6. Turn left onto Williamson Valley Rd. Proceed 2.5 miles.
7. Turn right onto Iron Springs Rd. Proceed 1.6 miles.
8. Turn right onto N Granite Basin Rd. There should be a sign at this intersection pointing to Granite Basin Lake. Proceed 3.2 miles.
9. After you pass the campground host's trailer, follow the road (a one way loop) toward the lake. Ignore the turnoff (dirt) that heads to the lake, and proceed a few hundred yards to the paved parking area on the right. There are restrooms here, and a spigot for water. We'll meet there at 7:30 (ish). If you miss the parking area, you'll continue around the one way loop, and end up at the campground host's place. Just try again...

I derived these instructions from Mapquest. If you'd like to see a map, go to Mapquest, and get directions from Phoenix, AZ to Granite Basin Lake, Prescott, AZ. Their instructions state that a number of the roads are unpaved. They must have old data, because the roads we will be driving on have been paved for many, many years...

See you soon!

Hank Hiking

P.S. I'm all for going out to eat after the hike. It IS the tradition, isn't it?

Sounds good. Since I am coming from Surprise I may take the 60 to Wickenberg and come up that way. Prescott Brewery is always good for eats after hiking. Sometimes live music in the Square, but later at night I think.

If you come up through Wickenburg, Peeples Valley, etc., you might consider turning at Kirkland Junction and coming up through Skull Valley. It's a pretty drive, and maybe 15 minutes faster...

Thanks I will do that!! If the meeting time is 0730 I will plan on leaving about 0500 to allow for my habit of leaving later than planned, and any possible delays.
