Well hopefully you're already off enjoying your trip...
Back in March 2006, we had permits to descend New Hance, camp a night there, then go to Horsehoe Mesa, then up the Grandview on the 3rd and final day. The day before we left, it snowed 2 feet on the rim and the temps were around 10 degrees. We decide to descend anyway, and tt the Colorado River at Hance Creek when we arrived? No tent needed - probably got to around 40 at night, beautiful weather. A few sprinkles here and there, but it was really pleasant! The photography was amazing, too, with the clouds adding an extra dimension. Hopefully you have/had a similar experience _________________ Mountains complement desert as desert complements city, as wilderness complements and completes civilization. - Ed Abbey |

Yeah, if he gets there today and starts hiking, then if the Park closes tonight or tomorrow morning, he will already be down there. The backcountry rangers are going to hike down and clear people out as much as possible, though, you can bet on it. Let's hope, though, that he started his trip, or starts it today. Then they won't stop him. But if his trip starts on Sat. he is pretty much out of luck, he won't be able to get into the Park.
People with river trip permits will be allowed to start on Sat or Sun, but those with Monday permits are SOL and will sacrifice their trips. The weekend launchers have to have all their equipment and people at the Ferry by 7 a.m. on Sat. The road block is already being set up, and it will close down at 10 a.m. on Sat. and no cars can get in or out.
It's just a big mess, and it costs more to keep Grand Canyon closed than it does to keep it open. |

I had completely overlooked that - the gov't shutdown will close the park (and all national parks). Run down the trail fast!!!
Talk about a trip with solitude....it'll be a ghost town when he gets out of there! Might be like a scene out of a horror movie _________________ Mountains complement desert as desert complements city, as wilderness complements and completes civilization. - Ed Abbey |

Well, he will have to get there today. Otherwise, they won't let him in.
It is raining and snowing up here in Flag right now. |

YAY, cancel my last remark, Canyon to stay open. (Don't cancel the rain and snow remark, though, snow has fallen overnight and it is still coming down, although I think it is too warm to stick very long.) |

Sorry for the post and bail. While I didn't do the Canyon we did do an overnighter in Sups. Which was a first for me. I'll post more soon. _________________ Douglas
