At the recommendation from a new friend from the Arizona Mountaineering Club, Hikngrl and I saw an excellent movie Tuesday night. The North Face - http://www.northfacethemovie.com/
It is a "new" movie that is actually an English subtitled re-release of a movie originally named 'Norwand' - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0844457/
The movie is a fairly accurate docu-drama -
Quote:
TO BE THE FIRST TO CLIMB THE FAMOUS, NOTORIOUS EIGER NORTH FACE—THE DREAM OF MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS FROM ALL OVER EUROPE IN THE SUMMER OF 1936.
Based on a true story, NORTH FACE is a gripping adventure drama about a competition to climb the most dangerous rock face in the Alps. In July of 1936 - less than a year after the most recent and fatal attempt, two top German mountaineers, Toni Kurz (BENNO FÜRMANN) and Andi Hinterstoisser (FLORIAN LUKAS), take up the challenge to become the first to scale the infamous rock face, the so-called Murder Wall.

This period piece is very accurate and quite entertaining and we recommend seeing it. The stay at the Harkins Camelview is supposedly only a week so you may have to hurry to catch it.

Thanks for posting this, it looks like it will be playing at the Loft Cinemas in Tucson for at least the next week. The story of the North Face of the Eiger is one of the great mountaineering tales. For more reading on this exciting story, read The White Spider or The Eiger Obsession.

Last day for it today at the Loft. 4/8/10.
Going to go to the 4:15 showing since I started reading a book called "Where the Mountain Casts It's shadows." by Maria Coffey. Book about extreme climbing and it's dark side. I also love Jon Krakuaer's book Eiger Dreams.

Gotta love the old movie called the Eiger Sanction too, with Clint Eastwood.

Great movie , Thanks for suggesting it! It tied in perfectly with the book I am reading. I want to go to Switzerland someday and ride the train up into the Eiger.
