In the future I may have the opportunity to visit the area of "Pietown" New Mexico. While there I'd like to do some hiking. If anyone has been in the are and has trail suggestions I'd be grateful. Thanks.

That's a popular stop off for the CDT thru-hike. I'll bet you could find a lot of info around town when you get there. I did a quick search on the web, but not a lot of "free" info out there.

I noticed the same lack of free stuff. I figured worst case we would just locate the Cdt and head out.

There is nothing in Pie Town except a restaurant and a campground. It really isn't much of a town. I think it does have a post office, too. If anything, it is more famous amongst cross country cyclists than it is thru-hikers, probably partly because there are way more cross country cyclists that use the 60 corridor, than there are thru-hikers. And the CDT through there follows a gravel road, so not very scenic. The cyclists talk about the free campground and, of course, the pie.

There has been at least one book written about Pie Town: Pie Town Woman, by Joan Myers. It is a true story about some hardscrabble homesteaders.

That area also makes it into Miles From Nowhere, by Dayton Duncan, a book about the least-populated counties in the US.

People in Pie Town shop for groceries in Springerville, where I live, or they have to drive to Socorro. They are just about in the middle. Quemado has a food store, but it is very limited.

We spent a few days in the Pie Town area. It was beautiful weather and amazing skies. The Milky Way was so clear it was amazing. We had a great view of one of the antennas of the VLA. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Very_Large_Array So I kept thinking about the movie Contact and aliens.

Aside from a 10 mile run along a hilly road, it was a laid back weekend of fun.

What was the 10 mile run for? Just for fun, or an event? There is the annual half marathon going on here today--I just got back from driving a school bus full of adult runners to the starting line. They sure could have used more participation. Probably fewer than 50 runners.

Sweet. I'll bet the skies were killer out there.

Will have to keep this one on the to-do list.
