Kendrick Peak Hike Sat July 24th 2010
We haven't gotten out in a while and were trying to figure out a hike that we could do with our out of shape selves somewhere cool. So we talked and remembered one that desertgirl put together a few years back and so I have basically copied her old post to make this new one.
What is it?: Camp and hike at Kendrick peak.
The Plan?: Hike Kendrick or just lounge in camp.
Please come prepared to hike your own hike.
Proposed Trail Head start time: 8:00 am.
There may be inclement weather, come prepared.
More Information : Distance Round Trip 8 miles, Trailhead Elevation 7700 feet , Elevation Gain 2718 feet, Av Time Round Trip 6-7 hrs Rating: Moderate
This is a hike to one of the highest vistas in northern Arizona. From Kendrick's 10,418 foot summit, you can see the Grand Canyon to the north and Oak Creek Canyon to the south. In addition to the impressive scenery, it's a good place to see wildlife, especially elk and mule deer. The trail starts in the ponderosa pines and climbs into the mixed conifer forests of Douglas fir, white fir, Engelmann spruce and corkbark fir within the Kendrick Mountain Wilderness. Note that there are no reliable springs along the trail and no water at the top of the mountain.
Just below the mountain's summit, you'll see an old cabin. This is the old lookout cabin, built in the early 1900s and listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
Trail Layout: After about 1/2 mile of trail, this route up Kendrick Mountain follows an old fire road for about one mile. From this point the trail becomes a foot path again and is well marked and gently sloped. Almost all of the trail is within the Kendrick Mountain Wilderness.
Trailhead Location: Trailhead at 7700 feet. An accessible vault toilet is available here. Trail starts at the parking area along FR 190.
USGS Map(s): Moritz Ridge-Kendrick
Campsite: Directions to campsite:
From Flagstaff, go northwest on US 180 about 10 miles past the road to the Snowbowl, to the FS193 (on the left). (Note: this turnoff is 1 mile past the Nordic Center) Take FS 193 west about 3.5 miles to FS 171. Turn south (left) and go about .7 mile to FS 9003K. Turn northeast (left) onto FS 9003K about .4 of a mile. Just beyond the stock tank on your left the road forks. Take the left fork about 250 yards. There is a nice spot with a cul-de-sac drive up into the trees with a great view of the San Francisco Peaks.
(This is the same campsite as the Lava Tube 2006 GHOTM and the Kendrick 2006 GHOTM)
It wouldn't be an AZH hike without a food list!
Food:
Hikngrl and GTG - brats, condiments, buns for Sat PM, pancakes and syrup for Sun. AM |

Enjoy everyone! Pretty cloudy all day today, quite dark even, but only a sprinkle or two up here in the morning shadow of Humphreys. _________________ The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see. |

Great trip. We lucked out with the weather big-time, it was perfect. Only a few sprinkles overnight on Friday, even got to see that moon both nights.
Hmmm, I sure don't remember that trail being such a huffer, but it sure is worth it once up on that lookout tower. It was overcast for most of the hike, but came in handy, kept things a little cooler; still got a little sunburned though.
Shawn - we were trying to pick out your location from the peak. A few theories were passed around. Hope you're enjoying the time there.
Thanks you guys, it was a fun trip. _________________ ________________________

What a fun weekend!
Despite the warnings all week that the area was going to be socked in with thunderstorms the weather was perfect for our weekend's activities! As Tom mentioned, it was cloudy most of the day Saturday as we hiked up the mountain but that helped keep things cool for the hike. Not a drop of rain fell on us all day Saturday nor this morning as we prepared and ate our yummy community breakfast prepared on Higg's new awesome Coleman stove!
The hike itself was beautiful with loads of wild flowers sprinkled every where, lots of wild strawberries covered the ground at the cabin on the saddle and the views from the look out were amazing!
Due to the fact that we are all a little older and a little more out of shape than we were the last time this hike was done by members of this site we all found ourselves "breathless" from time to time not only because of the views but because we were climbing up a mountian. Proof in the pudding that we need to pick up these hikes and get things rolling around here before I completely lose the ability to do these things!
We camped at our old campsite on 9003K (?) and had really awesome views of the Peaks and the meadow across the road which was sprinkled with wild flowers and pleasing to the eyes and ears until the neighbors got out their atvs and started running around.
We had a friend drop in on us from time to time who caused much speculation as to her status in the forest. We never saw her (Cujo/Sasha) with an owner and she looked some what scraggly and was quite skittish. When she first showed up it was dark and you could see her eyes glowing and see her large scruffy body but she wouldn't get near us so we couldn't check out her tags. By morning she came back and we could tell she was not the firece Cujo figure she seemed to be in the night so we changed her name to Sasha. Todd of course fed her from a distance as she seemed ravenous and she ate every piece of hot dog bun he threw her ( we were afraid to feed her a brat for fear she had been out there for a while and it would upset her stomach and make things worse for her).
All in all the weekend was a huge success except for the fact that you all were not there! Looking forward to more weekends like this one to get us out of the heat of the valley and to get us all back together again hiking and having a good time!
Now I will run over and post the few pictures that we got that turned out! Mike, if you would like to add any to the album I will put your name up there to be able to do so! _________________ ~~~Diane~~~

Sounds like a really nice weekend and no rain. I remember the time I did it, you (hikingirl) and Jeanine were heading down as I got close to top. Rain was threatning to hit and we all headed down. By time we got down we just got into the vehicles and the sky opened up Big Time.
Looks like it was a perfect weekend for a hike
Sasha? I'm thinking it was a dog? Hope the little thing wasn't lost and left out there to fend for itself. Hopefully just checking campsites for friendly feeders. Glad it got something to eat and you didn't just shoo it away. _________________ Wanderingsoul (Michelle)

Fern Mountain is somewhere between Kendrick and Humphreys. Yesterday was such a gorgeous morning, hope you all enjoyed it as well. Five deer on the slope south of the lodge this morning, and a huge bull elk meandered across the prairie yesterday around noon. It is so beautiful here and I'm certainly enjoying all of that and the exercise. I've mowed down (chain saw) at least two work weekends of slash and round hauling. Fence fixing today. Life is good (so good I am afraid I'll wake up from this dream and have to go back to work). _________________ The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see. |

I second Diane and Tom's weekend assessment. It was AWESOME up there; mild and beautiful. Nice job on the camp site selection who ever gave us that one!
I didn't realize how much I missed these things until this weekend.
Thank you Tom, Todd and Diane!!!
ps. I can't seem to find my camera but when I do I will post all the pictures. _________________ All our dreams come true if we have the courage to pursue them...Walt Disney |

| Wondering what it was like for you folks. I was camping near Blue Ridge Reservoir. Rained quite hard for a couple of days. |

It was overcast and a few sprinkles Friday night, overcast but comfortable on Saturday during the day, and then it cleared up and was beautiful until we left Sunday morning. _________________ ________________________

I saw that yesterday. Thought you or Higgs hid it for a while when adding pics. Did it just disappear? _________________ ________________________
