The scheduling committee convened and picked Sunday, Feb. 21, as the time to repeat this Epic Adventure. We'll go from Perata to First Water, just like last time. While the route lacks lung-busting grades, it is long, with no bail out options, so give this some serious thought before committing.
We'll refine the start time as we get closer but plan on early. Any "car trick angels" out there who want to assist with the shuttle will be greatly appreciated, and if I survive trip, I'll buy your meal after the hike.
To participate at a more reasonable level, consider hiking in and joining us from First Water

Yes, I hope you all have as great weather and water as we did. It was a glorious hike and experience for me. Wow! I can't believe I made it.
I'd offer to be definite shuttle angel for ya but I have family coming in at the end of month and not exactly sure what day/time they'll be in. If I can swing it I might be able to help with shuttle. I'll post if I can do.
Oh Shawn, don't tell me the user guide isn't helpful... that is all I have to go on... Yikes! Maybe that REI class is in my future yet _________________ Wanderingsoul (Michelle)

There are Yahoo "groups" for the garmin models, and I've learned a lot from them. And we have resident GPS experts on these boards who are very willing to share. I can let you know all my mistakes and misconceptions anytime you like. _________________ The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see. |

I see that there is no one signed up for the alternate hike.... My stepmom is wanting to hike with us but will need an alternate hike and being from Nebraska is not familiar with the area so we were hoping some one was going to be doing an alternate hike in the area so she could hike with them.... Anyone thinking about it? _________________ ~~~Diane~~~

Start Time, Car Tricks?
Looks like we will have a few hardy souls on this trip, so we'd better nail down a start time.
Sunrise is 7 AM give or take, which means it will be light enough to hike by 6:30 or so. The advance party a few weeks ago mentioned the spectacular sunrise viewed from the trail. (You can guess where this is headed.) What is the reaction to a pre-dawn start time, say 6:00? Since retirement I'm not so familiar with 6:00 occuring twice in one day, but I seem to remember that it does.
Alternatively, I suggest no later than 7 or 7:30.
I am happy to help set up the car tricks. I can meet whoever wants to leave their vehicle at First Water and then drive to Peralta with drivers/hikers. I can take 4 others cosily or 5 if someone wants to sit in the back with the gear--it's been done before. Then I'll need a ride back the my car at Peralta after the hike and before the eating begins.
Alternatives? Options? A Better Idea? Let's get this discussion going. _________________ The bear went over the mountain to see what he could see. |

I'm not opposed to an early start, but since I'll be coming from south of Tucson, I prefer to drive to Peralta and do the post-hike shuttle.

Dang it all...I was getting all geeked up for this hike as I would have been able to make it, then I just noticed that it is on a Sunday.
I don't hike on Sundays so I cannot make this!!!! This SUCKS!!!!

Diane,
I'm hiking Black Mesa Loop that weekend with a small group...9.5 total miles...can your step mom do that many miles? She's welcome to join my group. I was going to do it the easy way (clockwise) so there is only the gradual climb out of Boulder Basin on the Dutchman (but a steep descent from Black Mesa down) I have an extra set of trekking poles to lend her if she needs them.
Any alternate hikers are welcome to join this one! With any luck, we'll meet up with the thru hikers somewhere on the Dutchman in the afternoon

Thanks Trish! I will talk to Sandy about it and let you know. We will have to come up with a meeting point and such for her as she will not be familiar with THs and such. Let me look at things....You are awesome! _________________ ~~~Diane~~~

Dave and I are both doing this hike... YEA! Anywho, we traded in the Rodeo for better gas mileage, and got a Saturn. We can meet someone at FW TH, and leave our car there. It will squeeze 4 for the after hike shuttle. _________________ Blond, James Blond... double "O", uh oh!!

Shawn "car tricks coordinator":
I am willing to park my jeep at First Water, hike in the opposite direction to Peralt TH, and bring your vehicle back to First Water. I may bring one other person with me, and/or another person from the group could join me. If two or more of us hike in the oppostite direction... we can bring all the vehicles back without the long car trick at the end of a long, tiring day. Kind of like what we did when we through hiked the Galiuro Mts... you from the south, me from the north, and we exchanged keys in the middle (or we planted them on the vehicles... can't remember).
