Bio: Although I am 72 years old, have a congenital rotation-scoliosis of the back and no cartilage in my knees any more, I still go hiking with my wife (but can't carry a pack any more), children and grand children -- my orthopedic friend says all other people in my condition would have been in a wheel chair by now. Some times I have to lie down for a couple of minutes in a fetal position -- then I can go on again for several miles. My favorite place is Havasu Canyon. In 1975, having never been in the West before, my wife and I came there via the back country --- Indian Hollow Camp Ground, the Esplanade, Red Wall, Thunder River, Tapeats, three days on oar-powered raft (American River Touring Association) with lunch breaks exploring side canyons, two flutes and a banjo on the raft, nights on soft sand with volley ball and story-tlling, riding shot-gun on the raft and going down the falls in the water with a life-vest on (not allowed anymore), and then hiked out up the Havasu, camping on the way looking up at a great-horned owl, three days camping on top of Mooney Falls, hiked out and hitch-hiked across ranches to the South Rim in a jeep (opened and closed the pasteur gates) and hitch-hiked with Apersion back to the North Rim (who complained that the Americans hadn't built a highway bridge across the canyon). We've been back with our children a dozen times. Sadly, my grand children will not see the Havasu we loved so much since the 2008 flood.
