This book chronicles eight quests in the desert southwest. The searchers seek lost treasure, a secure homeland, spread a religious message, for knowledge of the ancient Americans, for water and for power.

The author crafts history and romance, and brings to light the players in these dramas. The stories aren't always what you think--for example one chapter deals with the search for atomic supremacy at Los Alamos, then goes to Chaco Canyon, then to the search for Cibola-the seven cities of gold. The common theme is man viewing the desert as a land of opportunity and desire, despite the hardships involved. And an area big enough to support the ideas and dreams.

Some nice historical black and white photos are included, and some old map reprints.
